Kia ora koutou,
As most of you might know, The Sound Project Whakatāne is now being looked after by Tame Iti and his whānau, who are also transforming the old Wally Sutherland building into the exciting new creative hub Ātea.
This is super exciting and I’m stoked to see the studio already shifting to another gear - there is a real buzz building in there! It has been a privilege to help grow a space and a community around live, local performance, recording and musical whanaungatanga. I’m deeply grateful to everyone who has been part of the journey.
With this change, Kauri and I both felt the time was also right to let the focus shift to other awesome open mics around the region - time to pass on the baton, so to speak. So, our final WSP open mic night will be held on Friday, 31st October, from 6:30pm. This will be a chance to celebrate everything we have built together, the music, the creativity, and the community that has made this place special.
Over the next few weeks, the Studio, the Sound Project NZ page and the Whakatāne Sound Project group will transition into Rama Studios, carrying the kaupapa forward into a new chapter with fresh energy and ideas.
Ngā mihi nui to everyone who has supported The Sound Project along the way. Let’s make this last open mic one to remember!!
