In a crisis, information spreads fast - but not all of it is right. Bay of Plenty Civil Defence is reminding locals this Cyber Smart Week to pause before sharing posts online. A dramatic headline or vague warning could be misleading, and even well-meaning shares can cause confusion.
Their advice is simple: check the source before you share.

Radio 1XX is proud to be the local Civil Defence Radio Station, working directly with Civil Defence to bring accurate, real-time updates to the Eastern Bay. When social media is full of rumours - or when the internet’s down, you can count on 1XX to keep you connected and informed.

In an emergency, social media can be a great way to stay informed and check in with friends and family. Unfortunately, it can also be a place for rumours, misinformation or misleading advice to spread.

Especially during emergencies, when emotions are likely heightened, it’s important to make sure the information we’re reading and/ or sharing is accurate, as it could be life-saving.

This week is Cyber Smart Week, so we thought we’d share some top tips on how to spot misinformation. If something sounds too dramatic or vague, it might not be true. There’s a chance the content has been created in order to trigger a reaction.

Double check that the post is current and looks for a blue verification tick. You can also cross-check with other official sources, (like us!) to ensure the information is accurate.

Misinformation often plays on fear or urgency, and even well-meaning shares can cause harm. Take a moment to verify information before acting on or sharing it.
