Announcement of outcome of recent speed reviews

Speed limits will be changing in the popular towns of Karangahake and Waihī after a speed review was undertaken by NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA). There will be 3 changes to the speed limits.
The consultation process ran for 6 weeks and showed those who made a submission were somewhat split on whether there was support for these lower speeds.
We received 271 submissions for Karangahake and 217 for Waihī consultations. In Waihī, many submitters supported the proposed lowering of speed up to the busy Dean Crescent intersection where there were significant heavy vehicles and vehicles towing trailers.

The Hauraki District Council were very supportive of the changes, pointing out that the Refuse Transfer Station down Dean Crescent attracts a high volume of local traffic having to exit what looks like an urban intersection onto a 100km/h highway.

While there were slightly more submitters (57%) indicating they had concerns on the change of speed for Karangahake, there were also many comments noting that a lower speed limit would help the many visitors to the area navigate the tricky nature of the road, making it easier to get in and out of the car park and across the road when the car park is full.

The speed limit changes have been certified by the Director of Land Transport. This follows 6 weeks public consultation with partners, stakeholders and the community from August to October this year. The enforcement of the new speed limits will become legal once the new signage is in place, and the contractors are hoping to start this tomorrow.

Specific information:

SH2 Karangahake
From near Albert Street to west of Waitawheta Road
Length 2.8km
Current speed limit: 80km/h
New speed: 60km/h

SH2 Waihī (also known as Parry Palm Avenue)
From near the SH2/Martin Road/Baber Street intersection to near Orchard Road

Current speed limit: 70km/h
New speed limit: 60km/h

SH2 Waihī
From near Orchard Road to near Dean Crescent
Length: 850 metres
Current speed limit: 100km/h

More information on the permanent speed limits and our consultation summaries can be found on the NZTA website.

Thames-Coromandel District Mayor Peter Revell has announced the formation of a Mayoral Efficiency Taskforce (MET) to urgently identify savings and keep planned rate increases affordable for residents and ratepayers.
A small working group will review Council budgets closely, aiming to deliver a significantly reduced rate increase for next year at a level which is just half the Long Term Plan's expected increase for 2026/27.
"We were elected on a promise to keep planned rate increases low," said Mayor Revell. "Households are already under pressure, and we know every dollar counts. I cannot overstate the challenge we have in achieving this reduction, hence the need for urgent and focused attention. This taskforce will move quickly to deliver lower planned rate increases without unnecessarily compromising core services like water, roads, and waste management."

The Mayoral Efficiency Taskforce consists of Mayor Revell, Councillor Flemming Rasmussen, and Deputy Mayor John Grant, along with senior staff, including the Chief Executive.
