Whangamatā local honoured for lifesaving helicopter rescue

Bryan Black, a long-time Whangamatā community member and life member of the surf club, has received a District Commander’s Commendation after helping locate a missing kayaker blown offshore in strong winds last October.

Using his own helicopter at no cost, Bryan spotted the stranded kayaker 6.2 nautical miles out to sea. He relayed coordinates to rescue teams, allowing them to reach all missing paddlers quickly.

Bryan was recognised in front of family and friends and commended for his ongoing service to the Whangamatā community.

Discover how Bryan Black, a local hero, aided in a dramatic kayak rescue off Whangamatā Beach and earned a commendation for his bravery.

New two-lane Pepe Stream Bridge confirmed for Tairua 🚧🌉

Transport Minister Chris Bishop has welcomed confirmation that a contract is now in place to design and build the new two-lane SH25 Pepe Stream Bridge, replacing the 80-year-old single-lane bottleneck.

Fulton Hogan will build the $22m bridge, with WSP supporting design and consent work. The new bridge will include a 3m shared path, a 1.5m footpath, and safer pedestrian access near Pepe Road.

Construction is expected to start late 2026 and open by December 2027. SH25 will remain open throughout the build, with occasional night closures.

Coromandel MP Scott Simpson says the upgrade is “long overdue” and will improve safety, ease holiday congestion, and boost the local economy.

Transport Minister Chris Bishop confirms a new two-lane bridge on SH25 will ease congestion, enhancing travel for Kiwis and boosting local economy.

Thames clock tower ticking again after years of silence

After four years of being stuck at 4:34, Thames’ iconic clock tower is finally telling the right time again.

The clock, at the corner of Pollen St and Mary St, was gifted to the town by the Thames Lions Club in 1968. It since fell silent due to an outdated system and stopped for stretches of time since 1988.

Thames-Coromandel District Council and Thames Community Board worked closely with building owners GDC Buildings and received $21,000 from Pub Charity and Trillian Trust to fully cover the restoration and parts, with no cost to ratepayers.

Martin Cheer, the Managing Director of Pub Charity says: “Thames is the heart of the Coromandel and the clock sits at the heart of town. “Pub Charity is rapt to help with an investment in such an icon for the benefit of the people and their future generations.”

Specialised contractors Pilbrows Watchmakers completed the repair this week, bringing the historic landmark back to life.

Councillor Martin Rodley, who has long advocated for the clock’s revival, says the repair may seem small but its significance to the community is clear. “This clock has always mattered to the people of Thames. It’s part of who we are and getting it ticking again shows what we can achieve when our community and partners pull together.”

With the mechanism repaired and the hands moving once more, the clock tower is back to doing what it was built for - keeping Thames on time.

Summer Concert Tour switches from Whitianga to Auckland

Greenstone Entertainment has moved the 2026 Whitianga show to Auckland’s Spark Arena on Thursday, Jan 29, after fan feedback about the original Monday date after Anniversary Weekend.

The change means Whitianga misses out on one of its biggest summer events — and the boost it brings to local businesses — but organisers say the shift allows more fans to enjoy the historic line-up.

Whitianga ticket holders can transfer to Auckland or Taupō for free, or get a refund. Tickets available now at GreenstoneEntertainment.co.nz.

The 2026 Summer Concert Tour relocates from Whitianga to Auckland's Spark Arena on January 29, featuring Iggy Pop and Joan Jett!
