If you’re Māori, you can choose to be on the Māori roll or general roll – but if you want that change to count for this year’s Whanganui District Council elections, the deadline is 10 July.

🗳️ Māori roll = 2 Māori ward seats
🗳️ General roll = 10 general ward seats

You can switch after 10 July – but it won’t apply until the next election.

Your vote shapes the future of our Awa, our whenua, our whānau, and our mokopuna.

Whether you’re on the Māori roll or the general roll, your voice matters. Local elections decide who sits around the council table — and those people make decisions that affect our lives every day, from housing to water, from roads to rangatahi support.

If you’re on the general roll, you’ll vote for 10 general seats. If you’re on the Māori roll, you’ll vote for 2 Māori Ward seats. Both are powerful, both are important — but it’s up to you to make it count.

📢 The Whanganui District Council elections are happening this October, and for the first time ever, there are 2 guaranteed Māori Ward seats on Council.

🗳 Nominations open: 4 July
🗳 Nominations close: 5pm 1 August
🗳 Voting opens: 9 September
🗳 Election Day: 11 October

Why should we care?
Because decisions about our whenua, our awa, our whānau, and our future are being made — with or without us.

✨ We now have a real chance to bring mana motuhake into the Council chambers. But it’s not just about the Māori seats — there's heaps of us on the general roll too! That means we can vote in both spaces. Let’s make our voices heard across the whole system.

Did you know if there are more submissions in favour of the bill then the bill is likely to go to a second reading and following that a referendum 😱 We already know that Māori voter turnout is low - get on the roll whānau and vote!
