Album of the Week – Joe Kaptein – Pool Sharks
Te Tai Tokerau raised multi-instrumentalist Joe Kaptein returns with Pool Sharks — his latest full-length release and the debut outing for new label Jandal Records.

Recorded throughout 2024 with a trusted crew of long-time collaborators (collectively known as Pool Sharks), this follow-up to last year’s Eternal Afternoon is a mellow, expansive listen, rich in layered textures and laid-back grooves.
Building on themes introduced in Eternal Afternoon, Pool Sharks showcases Kaptein’s continued evolution as a composer, alongside the group’s sharp jazz credentials. Fresh off acclaimed releases with The Circling Sun, standout live residencies, and his role as musical director for the amazing Crystal Chen debut album, Kaptein is quickly establishing himself as a key figure in the new wave of New Zealand jazz.
From the jazz ambiance of single Sleepy Space Cadet to the swampy, spaced-out drift of closing track Cascade, the album blends vintage keyboards, reed instruments, shimmering percussion, and a tight rhythm section into something both nostalgic and refreshingly new.
A smooth, exploratory journey well worth sinking into. Pour yourself an afternoon drink and drop the needle on this stunning new album

Album of the Week: The Beths – Straight Line Was A Lie
A catchy, instant classic from Tāmaki Makaurau indie rock gems. On their fourth studio album, The Beths reach startling new depths. Straight Line Was A Lie is their most incisive, vulnerable, and emotionally layered release to date — all while keeping those catchy hooks and jangly guitars intact.

Don’t be fooled by the infectious melodies. Behind the shimmering influence of NZ greats like The Clean and The Chills lies Elizabeth Stokes’ most sharply observant and poetic writing yet — where cheerfulness is always tinged with creeping sadness and the metaphors are distinctly her own.
Take “Til My Heart Stops” — what sounds like a quirky love song à la The Cars’ You Might Think doubling down with poignant references to the numbing of antidepressants, detachment, and the push-pull of emotional vulnerability - all while still encased in one of the most beautiful songs The Beths have ever released.
Songs like Take, No Joy and the title song sound like they’re going to be amazing as the stretch and grow on the live stage

The Beths are at their absolute best on this, their 4th album - sharper, more vibrant, and catchier than ever.

On a side note the album is currently on high rotation here in the Badger’s Den with Little Miss 9 becoming a huge fan, pinning the inner sleeve poster on her wall and wanting to learn the electric guitar now

OUT NOW: You Can Call Me CC – the debut album from Crystal Chen

It’s hard to believe this is Crystal’s first release — You Can Call Me CC arrives fully formed, confident, and rich with smoky, jazz-infused soul.
Backed by a dream team from the NZ music scene — including Julien Dyne, Joe Kaptein, Kenny Stirling and more — Crystal conjures a modern speakeasy vibe with lush retro textures, smooth vocals, and subtle Eastern flourishes.
Tracks like “I Only Miss You When I’m Bored” feel like they belong in a 1960s French arthouse film, while Harrison Chau’s harp work channels the elegance of Dorothy Ashby’s classic Afro-Harping.
This is a mature, mesmerizing debut that’s bound to end up on more than a few Album of the Year lists.

Grab yourself a copy of the smoky purple vinyl, drop the needle & pour yourself an old-fashioned while you enjoy
