Better numbers than two years ago with the 3000-plus attendees leaving those behind this year’s Whitianga Oceans Festival feeling delighted. Organising committee chair, Linda Bird, yesterday said it was now time to download and digest the event. Linda said while she wanted to thank those who purchased tickets and attended the festival, acknowledgement also to the 100 volunteers, those who manned stalls, the entertainers and the sponsors. As Linda said – thanks to everyone.

The waiting game is just about over for councils on the question of - if and who - they may amalgamate with. Justin Tuburan reports.
With Thames Coromandel District Councillors tomorrow holding their monthly meeting, Mayor Peter Revell is reporting that the decision on potential council amalgamations will happen between now and the end of the month. In his meeting report, Mayor Revell understands officials are assessing the proposals, while the call to progress lies with cabinet. He said no feedback or questions from officials had been received on the Thames Coromandel submission which included partnerships with the neighbouring Hauraki and Matamata-Piako Districts.

The Thames Women’s Premier football team are again the Waikato Division One champions. Their 1-0 away win over Hamilton’s Northern United in challenging conditions yesterday was enough to secure the title. Keltie McManus scored the winner off a pass from skipper Emma Hinds-Senior.

Hauraki District rugby league action – after Saturday’s fourth round, Mercury Bay remains unbeaten and on top of the premier mens competition ladder. At home the Boars ran up 50 points against Te Aroha’s 10.

It wasn’t the result the Thames Valley Swampfox coaches were after, their team returned from the Kapiti Coast on the wrong side of a 57/26 loss to Horowhenua in the Heartland Rugby championship. The team is third equal on the points table.

130 riders took to the Whangamata Mountainbike Park on Saturday in the 4th annual Backrock Challenge. Milla Phipp won the women’s 60km race while David Howie is the men’s champion and the winner of the Andre Hillier Memorial Trophy for the fast down hill run.

One person has died following a motorbike crash near Matamata on Saturday evening.

Police say the single motorbike crash happened on Morrinsville-Tahuna Road, between Paeroa-Tahuna Road and Quine Road, about 6.45pm.

One person died at the scene. A second rider on the same bike was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Police are supporting the families of those involved.

The Serious Crash Unit examined the scene and the road reopened before midnight. Enquiries into the cause of the crash are continuing.

The boots were made for dancing at the 2026 Whitianga Oceans Festival this afternoon, as the Salty Steppers led a massive crowd through their paces in a heel and toe spectacular in front of the main stage. Cowboy hats bobbed and boots stomped in unison as festivalgoers of all ages joined in, turning the waterfront into one giant dance floor. With more than 3000 through the gates and Brad Cox still to come to close out the day, the Coast Meets Country theme was well and truly alive in Whitianga. Sunshine, Seafood and a Record Crowd at the 2026 Whitianga Oceans Festival

The sun came out, the hats came on and Whitianga turned it up in style today as the 2026 Oceans Festival drew a record crowd of more than 3000, well up on last year's 2500.

Soldiers Memorial Park was a sea of cowboy hats, picnic rugs and happy faces from mid morning, with festivalgoers spilling across the waterfront lawns and packing out the big tents. The wine and gin marquee did a roaring trade, with local favourites including Awildian pouring alongside SUNZ Seafood's paua and West Coast whitebait, while Dive Zone Whitianga kept the queues moving with their beer battered snapper bites. Over at Eat St, the food trucks barely had a moment to breathe.

On stage, Automatic 80's had the crowd singing along to all the classics, with plenty of dancing on the grass in front of the main stage. Keeping the whole show rolling was CFM's own Fabian Roberts, MC extraordinaire, who kept the energy high and the laughs coming between acts.

Community groups were out in force too, with the Whitianga Lions among the local clubs flying the flag and feeding the masses.

With Mercury Bay sparkling in the background and blue skies overhead, organisers could not have asked for a better day. The Oceans Festival continues to cement its place as one of the Coromandel's premier events, and on today's showing, next year's crowd might be bigger again.
