Maths Aotearoa and the refreshed curriculum
• Follows the science of learning by providing a sequentially structured teaching and learning programme
• Mastery is supported by the pedagogical approach using concrete (as identified in the teacher guide) and pictorial representations also in the student book before moving to abstract representations. Learning to use equations & expressions to communicate mathematical thinking.)
• Throughout the series are opportunities to use concepts in problem solving situations. These opportunities to apply the concepts increase as the students become more procedurally fluent. (The number of mini projects increase over the series.)
• Technology is used effectively with learning to use a calculator efficiently and using spreadsheets.
• Explicit teaching is used throughout, with the teachers’ guides providing the teacher with the necessary conceptual understanding to ensure a conceptual focus as well as a procedural focus
• The know: Concepts & Content for each year group align very closely with the current series structure – one teacher guide & student book per year
• Maths Aotearoa is written in New Zealand for New Zealand by an international author, a teacher with over 20 years classroom experience from year 0 - 8 and a professional learning facilitator in the teaching and learning of primary mathematics for another 20 years.
