🚫 Fireworks banned in Coromandel 🚫

Fire and Emergency New Zealand is enforcing a ban on fireworks in the Waikato’s Coromandel Zone, as of 8am Tuesday 23 December 2025 until Friday 30 January 2026.

This ban, which is possible under Section 52 of the Fire and Emergency New Zealand Act, prohibits the private use of fireworks. Approved public displays will go ahead.

Waikato District Manager Daryl Trim says the fire risk across the zone is high.

"We’ve had consistently warm and windy days which has dried out the vegetation. The vegetation in this area is mainly scrub, which is very quick to burn when dry.
"It only takes one spark from a firework for a devastating wildfire to start," he says.
In the last two weeks, there have been two fires caused by fireworks, one near Pauanui and the other near Port Jackson.

"As visitors arrive to spend their summer holidays in the Coromandel, the area will see an increase of about 80,000 people. We want to make sure everybody knows to enjoy our public fireworks displays instead of lighting their own.
"Let’s all do our part to protect this beautiful part of our country."

The Coromandel Zone is already in a restricted fire season. This means you need a permit approved by Fire and Emergency for most open-air fires, which you can apply for on

Planned Water Shutdown for Matarangi Township, Tuesday 9 December at 10:00pm

TCDC: PRESS RELEASE

A heads-up to our Matarangi residents that we have a planned night time water shutdown late Tuesday evening as our contractor Veolia carries out essential repair work on the township’s water network.

The shutdown will begin at 10:00pm on Tuesday 9 December and continue through to 1:00am on Wednesday, 10 December.

This work is being completed at night to minimise disruption to residents and businesses. A full shutdown is required as the repair involves the Bluff Reservoir flowmeter, a key component that regulates and monitors water flow for the village.

To help ensure everyone is aware of the planned outage, an electronic message board will be active at the entrance to town, reminding residents and visitors of the shutdown times as they drive in.

We apologise for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience as we get this essential work done.

If you have any specific water needs during this time, please plan ahead to ensure you have enough supply on hand.

Goose and rabbit management in Matarangi

Tonight, Thursday 20 November, we will be carrying out a shoot to manage the growing goose and rabbit population in Matarangi. This action addresses significant community concerns and ensures the safety and usability of our reserves and waterways.

Why is this happening?

November is a good time to carry out this shoot, but we have been delayed due to weather. We want to get on top of numbers before Matarangi becomes busy with summer traffic.

The population of geese in Matarangi is causing devastating damage to our green spaces. Approximately 500 geese are causing widespread issues in Matarangi on public and private land, including:

A minefield of droppings on sidewalks, creating slippery and hazardous conditions.
Damaging landscaped and grassy areas.
Aggression towards other bird species.
Contaminating waterways with waste, affecting water quality.
The population of rabbits has also become problematic.

How will it be done?

A professional contractor will conduct the cull at night, using low-powered ammunition and a silencer to minimize noise. A quad bike will be used for efficient movement across the area and temporary signage at primary entrances will be in use while the work is underway.

Safety and approvals

This process has been approved by the police and measures are in place to ensure minimal disturbance to nearby residents and the community.

All animal remains will be removed.

We recognize that this is a sensitive issue, but it’s a necessary step to address ongoing problems reported by residents. Thank you for your understanding as we work to maintain the safety and well-being of Matarangi.

Feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Matarangi Shops Carpark Upgrade

Over the next couple of weeks contractors will lay new concrete at the Matarangi shops carpark replacing the existing chip seal which after many years is failing.

It is hoped to start this done immediately after Labour weekend so that it will be ready for Christmas.

No vehicle access will be available from Tuesday morning 28th October through to possibly the 10th or 17th of November depending on weather interruptions.

Pedestrian access to the shops will however be maintained down the existing pathways.
