In this audio feature, Nadia Al Taii and Abdullah Al Maawali meet the Dutch family behind .upon.a.truck, who traded stability and comfort for a life of freedom and adventure. Having travelled through many different countries and continents in their refurbished truck, they reflect on the lessons that emerge when life slows down. Their journey raised the question for us: what can life on the road teach you that stability cannot?

Roshini Goyate, poet, writer, and communications specialist, reflects on how the vulnerability demanded by writing can reshape one’s relationship with the self, and in turn, alter the way one experiences the world. Her poem “Coconut Oil,” featured in 50 Poems to Open Your World, offers an intimate meditation on identity, memory, and belonging. The poem reveals how poetry can reveal the specific textures of lived experience while uncovering emotions and truths that resonate universally across differences.

Nadia Al-Taii hosted poet, author, and communications specialist Roshini Goyate for a thoughtful conversation on poetry as self-confrontation, rebellion, and endless revelation. They began with a discussion of her writing in “Shadow Work”, which is one of four pamphlets in a collection called “4 Brown Girls Who Write”. They reflect on and discuss how poetry is the appropriate tool in excavating what we’ve buried in the shadows. The pamphlet is available through Rough Trade Books .
