🕊️ SABIAS QUE? La Paloma Migratoria (Ectopistes migratorius)
La paloma migratoria era una de las aves más abundantes del planeta. En el siglo XIX, se estima que había entre 3.000 y 5.000 millones de individuos en Norteamérica. Sus bandadas eran tan enormes que oscurecían el cielo durante horas e incluso días al pasar.
Era un ave hermosa, con plumaje gris azulado, pecho rosado y cola larga. Se alimentaba de semillas, frutos y nueces en los grandes bosques del este de Estados Unidos y Canadá.
La llegada de los colonos europeos cambió todo. La deforestación masiva destruyó su hábitat, pero lo peor fue la caza indiscriminada: eran fáciles de capturar en grandes cantidades para vender su carne barata en los mercados. Se mataban millones al año con redes, armas y hasta derribando árboles enteros con nidos.
A pesar de las advertencias de algunos científicos, nadie creyó que una especie tan numerosa pudiera extinguirse. En solo décadas, pasaron de miles de millones a cero.
La última paloma migratoria conocida, llamada Martha, murió en cautiverio en el zoológico de Cincinnati el 1 de septiembre de 1914. Con ella, desapareció para siempre esta especie por la ignorancia y codicia humana.
Su extinción nos enseña que ninguna especie, por abundante que sea, está a salvo si no la protegemos. ¡Cuidemos lo que aún tenemos! 🕊️💔

The passenger pigeon was once one of the most abundant birds on the planet. In the 19th century, it is estimated that there were between 3 and 5 billion individuals in North America. Their flocks were so enormous that they would darken the sky for hours or even days as they passed.
It was a beautiful bird, with blue-gray plumage, a pinkish breast, and a long tail. It fed on seeds, fruits, and nuts in the great forests of the eastern United States and Canada.
The arrival of European settlers changed everything. Massive deforestation destroyed its habitat, but the worst was the indiscriminate hunting: they were easy to capture in vast numbers to sell their cheap meat in markets. Millions were killed every year using nets, guns, and even by felling entire trees containing nests.
Despite warnings from some scientists, no one believed such a numerous species could go extinct. In just decades, they went from billions to zero.
The last known passenger pigeon, named Martha, died in captivity at the Cincinnati Zoo on September 1, 1914. With her, this species disappeared forever due to human ignorance and greed.
Its extinction teaches us that no species, no matter how abundant, is safe if we do not protect it. Let's care for what we still have! 🕊️💔
