Fish in standard rearing tanks often deal with empty, sensory-deprived environments—sometimes developing stress behaviors like continuous wall-rubbing. But solving this might not require expensive tech. 🐟💡
A collaborative study evaluated an ingenious, low-cost approach: suspending frayed blue nylon rope into tanks to simulate the root architecture of floating water hyacinths.
The results?
Tilapia in the enriched tanks showed significantly more natural foraging behavior and a marked reduction in abnormal, repetitive stress behaviors—especially under high-density conditions. Best of all, farmers don’t lose productivity: weight gain, feed efficiency, and survival remained completely unaffected.
