She was a Belgian Shepherd Malinois, part of the elite RAID unit of the French police, specialized in detecting explosives and assessing threats before anyone stepped foot in danger. On November 18, 2015, five days after the bombings that rocked Paris, Diesel was sent to first enter an apartment in Saint-Denis, where the responsible were suspected to be hiding.
She was the first to walk through the door. And that's where he died.
French police announced his death that morning on social networks. What happened next no one expected: in minutes, the hashtag — "I am a dog" — became a worldwide trend. Thousands of people, without knowing it, felt the loss of an animal that never hesitated to go first.
Weeks later, a British animal welfare foundation announced that Diesel would receive a posthumous medal for his bravery.
Diesel never knew he had become a symbol. She only did what she was trained to do: protect others, unconditionally.
