Somewhere in the Peruvian highlands above 4.500m altitude. Remote no man’s land. I decided to take the risk and keep going cross-country. The terrain and the topography allowed for it. Otherwise, we would’ve had to take a three-day detour around a mountain range and a large lake.

Proud of their masterful textiles—where patterns reveal marital status, social hierarchy and community identity—they live simply, valuing harmony, hospitality, and their cultural heritage. On the islands and communities around Puno at Lake Titicaca, traditional garbs are diverse and deeply symbolic. Each village and island has its own distinct traje, often passed down from mother to daughter, with colors and patterns linked to local history, land, and identity. On Amantani, women wear multiple layers of hand‑woven skirts (polleras), elaborately embroidered blouses, and a knitted wool shawl around the hips. Much of the fabric is still woven on backstrap looms, using techniques preserved for generations. The bright colors aren’t arbitrary: reds and pinks often symbolize the earth and fertility, white represents purity, and blue stands for the water and Titicaca. Together, these outfits transform everyday life into a living textile archive of Quechua and local Andean cultures.

We stumbled upon quite a few abandoned villages and places already. Some of which weren’t even marked in the maps. Others like this one was actually marked. I was hopping to find food and groceries there. Met an old native a few hours back and he told me it was abandoned in the 1980ies. No road there, only an old walking path. A bit scary to be there, in the middle of nowhere at 3.700m altitude. But also it always makes me feel quiet. I spend an hour there exploring and imagining what life there must have felt like.
