“When I enter the world of plant medicine, I suddenly feel happy, relaxed. It’s like I found my space, my purpose,” tells Fabio Rodríguez, as we chat in his Sacred Valley home.

Fabio is the founder of the Peru-based project MicroHealing, which provides facilitation for individuals using microdose quantities of psilocybin for medicinal and therapeutic purposes.

Fabio divulges that he experimented with “every type of substance you can name” as a teenager, yet he always held a great respect for plant medicine, especially ayahuasca.

For decades, he considered the psychoactive brew to be the ultimate medicine for healing and inner work.

That all changed just a few years ago when he was able to pull himself out of an extreme depression with the emotional and physical supportive benefits of psychoactive mushrooms.

“To begin, I’m going to tell you the story of my father,” says Elvira Argandoña Morales. She stands before a two-burner gas oven and shelves of wooden hat molds (ormas) crafted out of rich cedar, pine and cypress. We’ve crowded inside her father’s legendary hat workshop, Sombrerería Teodosio Argandoña, located upon a sleepy and slightly inclined street in Maras. The shop’s blue wooden door hangs open and sunlight pours in, bouncing off the rows of stark white hats that line one of the adobe walls.

This is where her father, Teodosio, worked for nearly half a century of his 70-year career, making and mending the iconic high-crown straw hats of Maras, sombreros de mestiza. Since the passing of Teodosio four years ago, Elvira, the youngest of twelve siblings, has been working to preserve not only her father’s craft but a fading piece of Maras tradition.

Serving as a store and gathering point for events and workshops, Hilo Imaginario is also Ximena Garcia’s sewing and craft studio and an extension of her home. With no set hours, the shop is open to the public whenever Ximena finds herself there, be it while working on a lightweight patterned dress, discussing politics with her neighbor over a cup of coffee or taking care of quotidian tasks beside her Quechua-speaking landlords.

Preparing and baking an average of 32 sourdough loaves and 8 baguettes per production session, Alonso Melgar is incredibly methodical and admittedly obsessed when it comes to baking bread.

“I have an anxious way of being and I need to be constantly creating something,” he explains. “Before I explored my creativity through other forms— drawing, painting or working with wood— but now it’s with bread.”

“One of the pillars of Maleza is that it becomes a place where the local community and that of foreigners can unite…where artists and artisans alike are welcome to share their talent,” comments Paul Gambin, one half of the duo behind Maleza.

He and his partner, Alejandra Orosco (both active photographers), opened the arts center in late 2022. Though the heart of the project is based around the growing library of art and photo books, Maleza regularly hosts public events and workshops, gathering artists and inspired learners alike.

“We want the world to know our craft, but perhaps more importantly to understand the value of our pieces,” says Braulia Puma. “There is so much dedication behind the process of what we do.”

Braulia is the founder of Pumaq Wasin, an association of women weavers in the Pucamarca community, near Laguna Piuray in the Chinchero district.

Using backstrap looms and naturally-dyed fibers, this six-person crew is preserving an ancient tradition of Peru that is fading as synthetic and low-quality alternatives fill Sacred Valley textile markets.

Dry splatters of clay mark the white walls of second-floor ceramic studio, remnants of countless sessions fine-tuning and executing his craft. This is where Yuri begins his ceramic-making process, one that results in functional pieces with whimsical flair.

As we follow him around his at-home studio to learn more, it becomes clear that the serenity he finds in the Sacred Valley mirrors the calm he found in the German countryside some decades ago when he first began to shape a passion into a career.

“I have a tendency to do many things at the same time,” laughs Coco Esteve, as she stands in the middle of her busy, at-home art studio in . A native of Alcoy, Spain, Coco was a painter and photographer in an earlier chapter of her life. Currently, she practices stick-and-poke tattoo, is quickly developing a steady hand with a gun, and offers creative courses that combine her pedagogical knowledge with her artistic talents.

What drew us to visit her at her tucked-away country home, however, is her experimental hand — which has served as the connecting thread between the artist and a cooperative of women weavers in the .

Maize, or corn, has been a staple of Andean cuisine and culture since pre-Inca times. In fact, some archaeologists date the origin of chicha de jora, a fermented corn drink, to as early as the Chavin culture (circa 900 BC). Today, locals of the highland regions in Peru continue to produce the traditional beverage, an impressive demonstration of its resistance to being forgotten.

Born and raised in Lima, Peru, Risa had been clinically diagnosed with depression at 19 and assumed she would have to rely on antidepressants for the rest of her life. Though her career as a painter was burgeoning, she continued to feel unworthy and inextricably sad. With her young son in tow, she decided to move to Amsterdam, “seeking something to happen that would take away [her] sadness.”
