Following the recent rainfall experienced across parts of Papua New Guinea, including the North Fly region, there are growing signs that water levels along the Fly River are beginning to rise slowly.

This development is bringing renewed hope to communities and businesses in Kiunga, which have been facing serious shortages of essential food items and other supplies after prolonged low river levels disrupted cargo movements.

Reports indicate that cargo vessels that have been anchored or delayed along the Fly River are now slowly making their way upstream towards Kiunga as river conditions improve.

If the river continues to rise sufficiently and navigation conditions remain safe, there is hope that these vessels will reach the Kiunga Port/Wharf during the coming week, allowing urgently needed supplies to be unloaded.

🚨 KIUNGA FOOD SHORTAGE: ROAD OPEN, FUEL ARRIVING — BUT FOOD SUPPLIES REMAIN CRITICALLY LOW

The opening of the Kiunga–Aiambak Road and the movement of fuel into Kiunga provide welcome relief for Western Province. However, food security remains a serious concern, with reports of residents rushing to shops as essential food stocks remain under pressure.

The prolonged dry conditions and critically low Fly River levels have disrupted the normal movement of cargo into Kiunga, with earlier reports confirming declining supplies of rice, flour, tinned food, cooking oil and other basic necessities.

The road now provides an important alternative supply corridor. Fuel has begun moving through this route, but the same urgency must now be applied to food and other essential commodities.

Authorities, businesses and transport operators are urged to work together to ensure regular food shipments reach Kiunga before the current shortage develops into a deeper food-security crisis.

The road is open. Fuel is arriving. Now, the food must follow.

Further updates- Kiunga Airport (26/08/2026)

I have been advised that CASA will tomorrow issue the acceptance and NOTAM to lift restrictions, allowing aircraft to resume operations into Kiunga Airport.

Flights will resume with limitations on runway length until full repairs and upgrading work are completed.
This means airlines will operate with weight/load restrictions, but it will restore the vital air link for North Fly, Middle Fly and Western Province.

This is a critical step for:

1. Food and medical supplies to get through

2. Business and passengers to move again

3. Relief for El Niño impacts in our communities

We must all thank CASA, National Airports Corporation, and the airlines for working urgently to restore this lifeline.

We will continue to push for the full restoration of the runway so there are no limitations and it will all depend on the outcome of the work the contractor will do for remaining stage 7-9 against now the El Niño challenges.

NB:
NOTAM = Notice to Airmen. Official notice that airport is open again with conditions.
Limitation on runway length = Planes can land/takeoff but with less fuel/passengers/cargo, smaller loads for safety.
