GOALKEEPING AND YOUTH FOOTBALL DEVELOPMENT COURSE UNDERWAY IN LORENGAU

A three-day Goalkeeping and Youth Football Development Coaching Course is currently underway in Lorengau, bringing together a diverse group of participants committed to advancing football development in Manus Province.

The training is being held at the Pihi Manus Conference Room and is facilitated by the PNG Football Association.

The course has attracted goalkeepers, coaches and volunteers from sub-associations and football clubs under the Manus Soccer Association, as well as school teachers from across the province.

Notably, the training also includes participation from inmates of the Manus Correctional Services, who are taking part as part of their rehabilitation and reintegration program.

The official opening of the course was graced by Manus Deputy Governor Len Temtem Mosim and Manus Provincial Administrator Mame Kasalau.

In his remarks, Mr. Kasalau emphasized the importance of structured training programs in building the capacity of local coaches and players, while also promoting youth engagement through sport.

The Provincial Administrator formally declared the three-day course open.

ACS–POKAPIN ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIP UNDERWAY AT PRINCE WILLIAM OVAL

The ACS–Pokapin Athletics Championship is currently underway at the Prince William Oval, drawing participation from ten teams representing schools and communities across Manus Province.

The championship is jointly sponsored by Admiralty Cleaning Services and The Pokapin Family, reflecting a growing commitment from both corporate and individual stakeholders towards the development of sports in the province.

Managing Director of Admiralty Cleaning Services, Michael Ndrasile, today presented a sponsorship of K5,000 to support the championship. He further announced a long-term commitment to continue this annual sponsorship beginning in 2027.

In addition, Mr Ndrasile also pledged K20,000 towards the management and administration of athletics as a sporting code in Manus, a contribution expected to significantly strengthen the sport’s organizational capacity.

Meanwhile, Geoffrey Pokapin encouraged athletes to remain committed and disciplined, while also calling for stronger collaboration among stakeholders to ensure the continued growth and sustainability of athletics in Manus Province.

Hon Jayso James Soon, President of the Los Negros LLG and PEC Parliamentary Chairman for Environment, Climate Change and Tourism officiated the event on behalf of the Manus Provincial Government.

Manus Governor, Hon. Charlie Benjamin, has made commitments for greater youth empowerment and participation. He stressed that young people must be given real opportunities to contribute to the province’s development.

The Governor highlighted the need for employment opportunities and provision of greater support for youth entrepreneurs, encouraging investment in skills development and business initiatives to promote self reliance among youths.

He also proposed the need for youth involvement in decision making, including the inclusion of a youth representative in the Manus Lapan Assembly, ensuring young voices are heard in shaping the province’s future.

JUST PLAY WORKSHOP CONCLUDES WITH SUCCESSFUL FESTIVAL IN LOMBRUM

A three day Just Play Workshop facilitated by the Papua New Guinea Football Association has successfully concluded today in Lombrum, culminating in a vibrant and engaging football festival for children.

The final day of the program saw a strong turnout of young participants from Lombrum and nearby communities, who took part in a range of fun, inclusive football activities designed to promote teamwork, healthy living and social development.

The festival atmosphere highlighted the core objective of the Just Play initiative in using football as a tool for positive community impact, particularly among children.

Participants of the workshop, many of whom were educators and community volunteers, expressed their sincere appreciation to the Papua New Guinea Football Association for delivering the program in Manus.

SCHOOLS RUGBY LEAGUE COMPETITION TO COMMENCE

Primary Schools within the vicinity of Lorengau are being encouraged to participate in the upcoming Schools Rugby League Competition.

The pre-season of the competition is now scheduled to begin on the 17th of April, 2026.

The competition will be conducted across three age divisions for both male and female students, Under-14, Under-16 and Under-19 providing a pathway for youth participation, skills development and talent identification in the sport.

Currently, East Lorengau, Pombrut, Childrens Academy and Lombrum Primary School have already expressed interest in taking part in the competition.

Matches will be played at respective school grounds using a “home and away” format with selected fixtures also expected to be hosted at the Prince William Oval.

LAND ACCESS CONTINUES TO DELAY ROLLOUT OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOLS IN MANUS PROVINCE

Access to land continues to pose a significant challenge to the rollout of junior high schools across Manus Province, impacting project timelines and slowing the expansion of education services to several communities.

Executive Manager of the Manus Division of Education, Mr Aaron Kepo, highlighted this during his response to a request from the Ward Councilor and residents of Kapou Ward in the Nali Sopat Penabu Local Level Government, who had proposed the elevation of Kapou Primary School into a Junior High School.

Meantime, the Manus Division of Education Advisor also took time to elaborate on the proper processes required when making submissions for new schools or status elevation. This clarification comes amid increasing requests from various wards seeking the elevation of their existing schools to Primary School and Junior High School status.

LORENGAU URBAN LLG IMPLEMENTS LORENGAU TOWN BEAUTIFICATION ACT

The Lorengau Urban Local Level Government has now commenced the implementation of key provisions under the Lorengau Town Beautification Act, with the aim to ensure cleanliness and improving public order within Lorengau Town. The enforcement of selected sections of the Act began two weeks ago as part of a phased implementation approach adopted by the Local Level Government.

In the initial stage of enforcement, the LLG has employed town Rangers to oversee compliance in public spaces, administer spot fines, and ensure adherence to regulations designed to uphold environmental and sanitation standards.

In accordance with the provisions of the Lorengau Town Beautification Act, individuals found in breach of these regulations are issued a spot fine of K50. Continued non-compliance will result in court action, where penalties can range from K500 to K5,000 and also up to K10,000, depending on the severity and frequency of the violation.

The Lorengau Urban LLG has reiterated that these enforcement measures are intended to foster civic responsibility and encourage active community participation in maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly urban environment.
