The inaugural Garamut and Canoe Festival officially concluded last week, bringing together 20 traditional culture groups, six canoe associations, and four string bands to celebrate the provinces rich heritage.

Organizers praised the dedication of the participants, logistical teams, security personnel, and international media partners who helped make the first staging of the cultural event a success.

Beyond the performances, the festival delivered a major financial boost to Mokoreng Community and the Los Negros Local Level Government, injecting approximately K312,000 into the community.

As part of an incentive program to support the host LLG, organizers distributed monetary donations to five local churches, with remaining funds set aside for local boat and vehicle hire operators who managed event transport.

The organizing committee extended special thanks to the Chalakupwen and End Inn crews for their behind-the-scenes work, as well as corporate sponsors like United Fuel Service and Pahun Security.

Following this strong turnout, organizers and residents are looking forward to building on the festival's momentum for future iterations.

🏐NETBALL RETURNS TO MANUS AFTER 11 YEARS

Netball has returned to Manus Province after an 11-year absence, with the launch of the Lorengau Urban Netball Club during the 47th Manus Day celebrations.

The club, known as LUNC, brings together seven ward clubs in Lorengau, providing young women and girls with an opportunity to participate in sport, build confidence and develop leadership skills.

LUNC President Jennifer Knight describes the return of netball as a new chapter for the sport and an opportunity for young women in Manus to develop both on and off the court.

“Through LUNC, we want to give our young girls the opportunity to grow, not only as netballers, but as confident young women, future leaders and proud daughters of Manus,” she said.

Establishing the club has not been without challenges, with Knight acknowledging the uncertainty and difficulties faced along the way.

The commitment of players, parents, coaches, umpires, ward executives and community supporters has helped bring the initiative to life.

“We believe our young people deserve opportunities. We believe our communities deserve something that brings them together. And we believe netball has a place in the future of Manus,” Knight said.

The club has also acknowledged the support of the Manus Provincial Government, the Lorengau Town Mayor, ward councillors and community leaders in making spaces available for netball courts across the wards.

Space has also been made available at Prince William Oval, providing a central location for the development of netball in Lorengau.

The launch during the Manus Day celebrations adds significance to the return of the sport, as the province marks its identity, unity and community spirit.

After more than a decade without organised netball, LUNC is now encouraging young women and communities to embrace the sport and help build its future in Manus.

The club's message is simple: “Stand up, step up, show up", for our children, our communities and for Manus.

The Governor of Manus, Hon. Charlie Benjamin MP, has delivered a passionate call to action to citizens and resource owners during the 47th Manus Provincial Government Day celebrations, urging the province to shed complacency and rally behind key development programs.

​Addressing the crowd, Governor Benjamin emphasized that the progress of Manus hinges on the active participation of its people, calling on residents to actively drive government initiatives rather than remaining passive observers of their own destiny.

​"It is time to reawaken the traditional resilience and resourcefulness which is what Manusians are," Governor Benjamin stated, urging locals to tap into their heritage of self-sufficiency to push the province forward.

​Highlighting the need for a shift in mindset, the Governor challenged the people to embrace a collective responsibility for future

"Let us choose self-reliance over complacency, purpose over laziness, and action over excuses," he urged. "The greatest gift the people can give their children is a future far superior to this present one."

​Governor Benjamin reiterated that while the government continues to work on unlocking major development projects across the island, success ultimately depends on strong community partnership and cooperation from resource owners.

He concluded his address by reminding the people that true progress begins when every citizen steps up to shape the province's economic and social future.
