What Government Banking Shifts Mean for BSP 📢

The recent decisions by the Papua New Guinea (PNG) government to move its accounts from BSP to the new National Banking Corporation (NBC), and the Australian government's A$2 billion loan guarantee to ANZ, present significant challenges for BSP Financial Group.

For Shareholders, this means:

* Potential Earnings Reduction: The transfer of government accounts will likely reduce BSP's low-cost funding and non-interest income, potentially impacting net profit. Shareholders could see lower earnings until BSP finds alternative funding and revenue streams.

*Increased Competition: With ANZ receiving significant support from the Australian government, competition in the Pacific banking sector will intensify. This could lead to higher customer acquisition costs and potentially lower profit margins for BSP in various products.

*Direct Impact on Share Price and Unrealised Capital Loss: The market has already reacted negatively to this news. BSP lost AU$930 million (PGK2.6 billion) on the Australian Stock Exchange. This represents an unrealised capital loss for shareholders who held BSP shares at the time of the announcement. A decrease in earnings potential and increased competitive pressure typically lead to a decline in share price as investors re-evaluate the company's future profitability and risk.

* Balance Sheet Resilience: While these moves create headwinds, BSP has reaffirmed strong capital and liquidity positions, providing a buffer to mitigate these impacts. The bank will need to focus on strategic ex*****on, including product mix, pricing, and growth in retail and corporate sectors, to overcome this "policy shock."

*Uncertainty for 2025-26 Earnings: The full extent of these policy decisions on BSP's earnings for 2025-26 will depend on the bank's ability to replace lost funding and diversify its fee income.

In essence, BSP faces a tougher operating environment both at home and abroad, requiring strong strategic ex*****on to maintain shareholder value. The immediate impact has been a substantial unrealised capital loss for investors, with potential for continued share price volatility as the market assesses BSP's mitigation strategies.

SECURITY CONCERN ⚠️

As Papua New Guinea approaches its 50th Independence Day, a complex mood seems to be settling over the nation. While this milestone should be a moment of great celebration, many people are feeling a sense of unease and frustration. The recent increase in criminal activity leading up, coupled with the strike by NCDC City Wardens, has raised valid security concerns for everyone. The absence of these wardens, who normally help keep public areas safe, adds another layer of vulnerability, especially in high-traffic parts of Port Moresby.

Beyond the immediate safety issues, there's a wider feeling of disillusionment. For many, the past 50 years have been marked by persistent corruption, rising inflation, debt, unemployment and a minimum wage that has remained stagnant. These ongoing struggles make it difficult to feel a celebratory spirit. The sentiment on the street seems to be that after five decades, the promises of independence have not been fully realized for the average citizen.

In light of these challenges, it’s understandable that people are weighing their options for Independence Day. For some, the best way to mark the occasion might be to stay home, prioritizing personal safety and quiet reflection over public gatherings. It's a day to consider not just where the nation has been, but where it needs to go next.

2 Mile Robbery Suspect Captured on CCTV ⚠️📢

Police in Lae are calling for public assistance after a gang of more than 15 criminals broke into the Mountain Ice Mini Mart at 2 Mile, 4 block, making off with a substantial amount of money and goods.

The early-morning heist, which occurred between 1 am and 2 am, saw the criminals use a ladder to climb a brick wall and gain entry through the roof while holding store guards at gunpoint.

While most of the suspects were not captured by the store's CCTV, one individual's face was clearly recorded, and investigators are now working to identify the man. Authorities are urging Lae residents to be on the lookout for suspicious activity and to contact police immediately.

"We are appealing to members to be aware and put an eye on suspicious faces and movements within the 2 Mile area and report to police," a spokesperson said.

The incident highlights ongoing security concerns in the area, as the community works with law enforcement to identify and apprehend those responsible.

PNG Fans Erupt as Cooper Bai Debuts for Gold Coast Titans

01/09/2025

A monumental achievement for Papua New Guinea's development agenda was celebrated this past weekend with the opening of the new Port Moresby-Alotau road corridor. This historic connection, a flagship project of the government's program, physically links Central and Milne Bay provinces for the first time.

The successful completion of this road is more than just an engineering feat; it's a powerful symbol of the government's commitment to national unity and progress. For decades, the lack of a land-based transport link between these key regions was a barrier to economic growth and social integration. Now, communities can look forward to new opportunities in trade, tourism, and access to essential services.

The road's opening culminates years of planning and construction under the government's visionary infrastructure strategy. It stands as a significant milestone, paving the way for further development and strengthening the country's transportation network. This achievement is a key highlight as Papua New Guinea prepares to celebrate its 50th year of independence, showcasing tangible progress toward a more connected and prosperous future.

JUSTICE WITH A VIP PASS 🔍⚖️

The former Deputy Finance Secretary - Jacob Yafai found GUILTY on all five (5) counts of misappropriation to the cost of K41.8 million.

It seems this case is a perfect example of how our legal system has two different rule books.

If you are a public worker who gets blamed for something, you'll face the music. There seems to be different set of rules for the higher-ranking officials who held positions of authority at the time of the alleged financial crime.

Are they largely shielded from accountability? Is their actions can't be judged by a normal court as in the case of Yafai?

Maybe its a divine mistake, maybe accountability only applies to those further down the food chain.

This case is a perfect example of a double standard in our legal system.

What's your thoughts on this case?

These boys from Kimbe are responsible for the recent robbery at Island Store in Namatanai last week.

They are also linked to several hold-ups in East New Britain (ENB) and New Ireland Province (NIP), working together with local boys to carry out these crimes.

If you recognize them, report immediately to the Police. People from Kimbe should also assist in identifying these suspects. They are dangerous and must be stopped.

Shockingly, they even posted this photo themselves on social media after the Island Store hold-up in Namatanai.
