IRC AND PNGFA SIGN MOU ON INFORMATION SHARING

Internal Revenue Commission (IRC) and PNG Forestry Authority (PNGFA) recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Information Sharing at Revenue Haus, Port Moresby.

This MoU paves the way for both agencies to share vital information concerning the affairs of logging entities in a timely and efficient manner.

The logging sector has been challenging to administer and manage and has proven to be a major revenue leakage area.

IRC Commissioner General Mr. Sam Koim has strongly emphasized the need to aggressively ensure that the conduct of players in the logging industry is properly scrutinized, monitored and regulated.

PROVINCES URGED TO INCORPORATE CULTURAL PROGRAMS

PROVINCES are being urged to incorporate cultural programs and implement at the province, districts and local level government levels.

Provincial administrators are also being challenged to take the initiative to drive cultural development agenda’s forward in the province.

Executive Director of National Cultural Commission, Steven Enomb Kilanda highlighted this while officially opening and closing a two-day cultural event at Togoba outside Mt Hagen City in Western Highlands Province in June.

Mr Kilanda says he has travelled to many provinces with Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture Isi Henry Leonard to officiate cultural events and programs but so far, he is yet to see provincial administrators team up with the agency and taking ownership of the programs and activities happening in the province.

NCC applauds Western Highlands for their support

The Executive Director of National Cultural Commission, Steven Enomb Kilanda has applauded the effort by the Western Highlands Province for taking the initiative to initiate the recent inaugural Parakam Amb Guu Festival.

Mr Kilanda says in travels around the country, he has never come across any woman, or women group hosting a cultural event.

He says its a milestone historical achievement for PNG.

He highlighted this when officially opening and closing the two-day cultural event at Togoba outside Mt Hagen City in Western Highlands Province in June.

USAID CONDUCTS FINANCIAL LITERACY TRAINING

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) through its Lukautim Graun Program (LGP), has supported 30 people, including 24 women from Nubia village in the Bogia district of Madang Province, to access financial literacy training (FLT).

Local trainer, Tina Manamb, certified through USAID’s partnership with the Center for Excellence in Financial Inclusion (CEFI), recently conducted the training on the basics of financial literacy.

Tina Manamb is also a director of Kumul Organics, a locally owned business enterprise, who buys and sells Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) and is supported by the Kokonas Indastri Koperesan (KIK).

Participants now have a better understanding of the basics of saving and budgeting, which are the foundational skills for creating new enterprises and increasing household and personal financial security.

TEACHERS URGED TO IMPROVE LESSON PLANNING

Teachers attending the Provincial In-service Training (PIST) week for Rabaul district last week have been urged to improve their lesson planning and preparation.

Participants were revisiting the structure and content of Standard Base Curriculum (SBC).

Speaking at the PIST closing at Malaguna Secondary School, Rabaul District School Inspector, Cecilia Tapil says lesson timetables are also vital.

She says children have limited attention spans, and teachers have to use a variety of activities to keep students interested in learning during lessons.

Mrs Tapil says an effective implementation of these tools, teachers and students will experience quality teaching and learning.

Meantime, a teacher on Watom Island LLG in Rabaul District of East New Britain says she is grateful for undergoing the PIST on Standard Based Curriculum or SBC.

Representing preschool teachers on Watom LLG, Mr Robin Okole says plans are afoot to do away with the Outcome Based Education and fully implement the Standard Base Education.

He says the onus is on teachers to keep up with SBC standards set.

He also highlighted challenges preschool teachers face include dealing with kids with special needs.

PEOPLE URGED TO LOOK AFTER PUBLIC SERVICES

A senior public official is urging people to appreciate and take care of public services delivered to them.

Philip Talpa, the Chief Executive Officer for Tambul-Nebiliyer District Development Authority says some of these services are from other partners as the DDA and district government cannot always assist in all sectors in all the LLGs.

He says some of these services are through assistance from donor partners and other government stakeholders.

He stressed this to students and parents of Bonga 1 and 2 council wards, during the opening of a double classroom, funded by the National Fisheries Authority, in the Lower Kagul local level government area.

KALANG ADVERTISING LIMITED, FIRST PNG RADIO STATION TO LAUNCH RADIO APP

Kalang Advertising Limited has become the first radio station in Papua New Guinea to have a Radio App, which was officially launched on Monday, July 3rd, 2023.

Acting Chief Executive Officer Bill Wartovo states that this Radio App is designed to provide listeners around the world with a seamless and personal radio listening experience.

He says it is a milestone achievement and bridges the gap in the radio broadcasting space, in-line with Kalang Advertising Limited’s digital transformation plans.

He further says Kalang Advertising’s achievement is also aligned with the Government’s Digital Plan 2023 - 2027.

The app creates easy listening convenience for accessibility in both urban and rural areas, as long as the listener has data to access the app.

Meantime, Mr Wartovo says, with the FM100 Rugby live telecast of the NRL, this app has made the difference in experience, with positive feed backs and support from users around the world have incredibly encouraging.

The brains behind the Radio App, Kalang’s ICT Manager, Luanne Borle says the app was developed in 2022, and has been on trial for the first six months of 2023, before its offically launched date.

Mrs Borle says the app has two basic features, accessibility anywhere in the world, as well as having access to FM100 socials.

She says, there has been some positive feedback collected during the 6 months and so far, there are 284 active users and 500 downloads, with users listening in from as far China, Hawaii, Switzerland and Australia.

Skel Host, a local PNG cloud hosting service, developed and hosts the FM100 Radio App available on Google Playstore.

Two Simbu Provincial Health Authority (SiPHA) board members have resigned to contest the 2022 National General Elections (NGE).

The two board members are Robert Kaure Nilkare who was the board chairman, and Michael Sipa who represented the community in the board and have served for over two years as inaugural board members.

The two board members coincidently will contest the Gumine Open electorate racing against the incumbent Nick Kopia Kuman when the writs open May 12th.

First Batch of 2022 Retirees Paid out

Ninety two retired public servants from 15 government agencies have been paid out at a cost of K5.7 million.

They were paid in Pay 8 and are the first batch, as the public service retirement exercise continues.

Secretary for Department of Personnel Management Sansan Taies says they were paid once their names had been validated and verified by DPM.

The weeklong health standard training programs by the National Department of Health (NDoH) has identified major setbacks of health care provisions in Gulf province.

A team of High-level facilitators from NDoH standard service conducted the workshop at the Kerena Catholic Hall recently where Health workers numbering 126 came from as far as Kikori and other areas to participate.

The participants especially community health workers and nurses from the rural health areas raised concerns that they have been working along in poor stages.

Kerema Police Station Commander Michael Pakyei has urged intending candidates and sitting MPs to refrain from conducting early campaigning because those found to do so will be arrested and charged under electoral laws.

According to Pakyei, early campaigning often caused problems among supporters and led to greater conflicts.
