Citrus is a high valued fruit crop and presently all citrus produce in the formal markets in PNG are imported. However citrus has adopted well in the fertile Whagi Valley (Jiwaka) and parts of Western Highlands as well as other provinces. There has been a growing interest in citrus production; in fact locals grow a range of varieties in small blocks, organically, for road side markets and own consumption, although some producers take their harvests to Lae and other coastal markets occasionally. The crop stands to become a regular income earner if proper post-harvest and marketing mechanisms are established, including downstream processing. Among those who find value in citrus is John Tai from Minj in Jiwaka (pictured).

There is so much potential for vegetable production in the Central Province, at village level. A huge market opportunity is right there at the footsteps, in the nation’s capital, at both the supermarkets as well as the open urban markets. Pictured is part of a huge display of organically grown temperate vegetables by farmers from Central Province during the 2019 World Food Day celebrations at UPNG's Forum Square Oval.

Morobe’s huge agriculture potential remains to be fully exploited, even if it means to revisit some of the colonially introduced nuts and fruits - such as guava. Edith Babun from Munum outside Lae has found a niche in semi-commercial guava production for the local free market, particularly the “White Indian guava”, and she’s been doing that for a decade now. The crop performs vigorously with quality produce all year round, and selling from K1 to K6 per guava depending on the fruit size. Edith has found this horticultural crop economical to meet her family needs. She supplies various shops in Lae on a weekly basis however the surplus goes to the main market, and at times at major public events in Morobe. Such commitment and innovations need to be embraced and her efforts should take another step further, not only as a business but what good is guava for food and nutrition security, and of course pharmaceutically?
