TRUCKS OR TRACKS?
The Kairuku Dilemma

We’ve seen the photos. We’ve seen the ribbon cuttings. Our Member is donating trucks to police and rubber traders. On the surface, this looks like service delivery. But we need to ask the hard question: Is this development, or is it a band-aid?

Let’s look at the "Downfall" of choosing trucks over fixing our feeder roads first:

1. The Depreciation Trap

A brand new Land Cruiser donated today will be a rattling bucket of bolts in 18 months if the feeder roads in Mekeo remain broken. We are throwing expensive machinery at a problem caused by poor infrastructure. It feels good now, but it’s bad economics.

2. Who Benefits?

A road serves everyone, the PMV driver, the mother going to the market, the student, and the farmer. A truck only serves the person holding the keys. Are we building a district for everyone, or just the lucky few with a donated vehicle?

3. The "Local Contractor" Gamble.

We hear that K1 Million has been given to local contractors (Auka and Behos Constructions) for the roads. This is good for local business, BUT... do they have the capacity? Or will we see "patch-up" jobs that wash away with the next big rain?

The Bottom Line:

Trucks are a "sugar hit" quick energy, but it doesn't last. Roads are the "garden food" hard work to grow, but it feeds you for a long time.
Member, we appreciate the mobility support, but don't let the shiny trucks distract us from the dusty, broken reality of our roads. We will be watching the quality of these road upgrades closely.
