PNG Chiefs Football Manager Michael Chammas has inadvertently linked Brisbane Broncos superstar Reece Walsh to the club’s 2028 NRL entry, following a slip of the tongue during a recent podcast appearance.

Speaking on the Bye Round Podcast with James Graham, Chammas was detailing the world-class amenities planned for the Players Village in Port Moresby when he mentioned a specific luxury intended for the Maroons fullback.

I am appalled, hearing the assault of a journalist at the Correctional Service Headquarters yesterday. This is disgraceful, unacceptable, and a direct attack on press freedom in Papua New Guinea.

No public officer has the right to intimidate or physically assault a reporter for doing her job. Violence against a journalist is an abuse of power and a betrayal of the very institutions meant to uphold the law.

An attack on a journalist performing her lawful duties is not merely an attack on an individual, it is an attack on press freedom, the rule of law, and the democratic foundations of Papua New Guinea. No officer of the state, regardless of rank or position, has the authority to intimidate, threaten, or physically assault a member of the media for reporting on matters of public interest.

Journalists play a critical role in informing citizens, holding institutions accountable, and safeguarding transparency. When they are met with violence for doing their jobs, it undermines public trust in our institutions and weakens the principles upon which our democracy stands.

A full investigation must be conducted and hold the perpetrators accountable to the full extent of the law.

The protection of media freedom is not optional, it is essential to good governance and democratic integrity.

With the recent turn of events today in New Ireland, Walter Schnaubelt should possibly be referred to Leadership Tribunal, with his mandate being revoked and him being terminated from Namatanai Open as Member Elect.

He has defied orders from Electoral Commission, Ombudsman Commission and the Department of Provincial and Local Level Government Affairs. Set the precedents now so that no one messes with the law.

Even though Byron Chan was sworn in today, Schnaubelt must face leadership tribunal according to the laws that governs all citizens of this country.
