BREAKING: Magnitude 5.2 Earthquake Strikes Near Papua New Guinea's Long Island

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck near Bara on Papua New Guinea's Long Island on Saturday evening, according to preliminary seismic data.

The earthquake occurred at 5:50 pm local time (PGT) on 4 July 2026, with an estimated depth of 182.8 kilometres (113.6 miles) beneath the surface. The epicentre was located at approximately 5.421°S, 147.166°E, near the southeastern part of Long Island.

The quake's depth means shaking may have been felt across parts of Madang Province and neighbouring areas, although deep-focus earthquakes generally cause less surface damage than shallower events.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, damage, or tsunami warnings following the earthquake. Authorities are expected to continue monitoring the situation as assessments are carried out.

Long Island is home to one of Papua New Guinea's most active volcanic systems and lies along the seismically active Pacific "Ring of Fire", where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur frequently due to the movement of tectonic plates.
