This is our mother Late Susan Karike, the woman who gave Papua New Guinea its flag.🇵🇬😢

The story began in 1971, before Independence. The country was looking for a flag of its own. Young Susan was only 15 years old, a schoolgirl at Yule Island in Central Province, when she entered the national flag design competition. With a humble heart she took her colours and drew what she felt was Papua New Guinea. She chose black, red and gold because they are the colours of our culture and traditions, she placed the Raggiana Bird of Paradise because it is unique to our land and represents our freedom, and she put the five stars of the Southern Cross that watches over us every night. Her design was simple but powerful, and it was chosen as the winner.

Then on September 16, 1975, that very flag she drew as a schoolgirl was raised for the first time as the flag of a new independent nation. That was 51 years ago. For 51 years that same flag has flown high through good times and hard times, through challenges and celebrations. For 51 years it has flown over our mountains, our villages, our schools and our basketball courts in Sugu and all across PNG. It has united us from the islands to the highlands as one people, one nation, one flag.

Mama Susan lived a simple and quiet village life until she passed away, never seeking fame for what she did. As we celebrate 51 years of independence this year, we remember and honour her, because her story reminds us that you do not have to be big or powerful to do something great for your country. A young Papua New Guinean girl with love for her country left us a legacy that will live for another 51 years and beyond.🇵🇬
