Simbu Warriors Exodus Continues
I donโt know what more the Simbu Province and CBL Simbu Warriors bid team need to do to get back into the Digicel Exxon-Mobil Cup. Next year will mark 7 years since a PNGNRLC Franchice from Simbu last had a team.
Simbu Province is known as one of the best breeding grounds for rugby league talent. Home of the likes of Wests Tigers Centre Justin Olam, former Canterbury Bulldogs Star Late. Bal Numapo, Sheffield Eagles Legend Menzie Yere, Hull KR Legend Stanley Gene and more.
Their offseason comps attract huge crowds. These competitions tend to showcase some of the best talents from local leagues in Kundiawa, Kerowaghi, Mt Wilhelm and more. Simbu Province makes the most sense when looking at all the Bid teams, with only Morobe Kandes being the other suitable option. From local participation to top level talent output. A Simbu Provincial Team make the most sense.
A Simbu Provincial Bid attempted to get in back in 2019 but was knocked back due to their homeground Dickson Oval not being up to standard.
In 2020 the PNGNRLC Chairman Adrian Chow cited the Dickson Oval again was not being up to cup standard. Also the Bidโs main sponsor Mountain Fruit Wine was a conflict of interest with PNGNRLC who are partnered with SP (South Pacific Brewery) as one of the Competitions main sponsors. So no deal again.
In 2021, the Provincial Bid Team under the stewardship of then Governor Michael Dua, who attempted again but under a new name the Simbu Angras, still to no avail.
Fast forward to 2024 the CBL Simbu Warriors under a new main sponsor CBL Limited have been knocked back again.
The most ridiculous part about it is PNGNRLC still tenders for Bids for new teams yet have not expanded the comp since 2019 when the Kimbe Cutters and Central Dabaris entered the comp. They keep promising that โwe will expand next yearโ but it never eventuates. The expression of interest itself has a 5 figure fee. It looks like a money making scheme. All this effort should be put into improving the comp.
It looks like the PNGNRLC will keep putting tenders out year after year under false pretence. Getting investors to waste resources to build stadiums and invest money only to fill their own pockets.
Itโs a shame what the competition is becoming. Letโs not be naive, there is a lot of politics that goes on.
