Susie McGrade is a true champion of PNG tourism and a survivor who has never given up on Rabaul.

In June 2025, Susie, born and raised in East New Britain, was granted PNG citizenship and is now a dual British-PNG citizen.

In this interview Susie tells the story of how the Rabaul Hotel survived the 1994 volcanic eruption.

“The 1975 independence of Papua New Guinea may have seemed peaceful, but it concealed a profound constitutional and moral injury. Passed without referendums, in PNG and Australia, the act may have constituted a violation of the Australian Constitution’s Section 128 and international law principles regarding Indigenous self-determination."

SPECIAL GUESTS FOR BOOK LAUNCH 👀

Ricky Mitio will launch his autobiography "Ovu ga’hoe" this Thursday night at a special dinner function at Lamana Hotel.

Prominent PNG academic Motsy David has been announced as the special guest MC, while acclaimed PNG musician Pius Wasi will perform at the launch.

Other special guests on the night include Tiri Kuimbakul, who wrote the Foreword for Ricky’s book; Sue Hurrell, daughter of the legendary Lloyd Hurrell, who was an inspiration to Ricky Mitio as he found his footing in the PNG coffee industry; and Glenn Armstrong, editor and publisher of Ricky’s book.

All guests attending the dinner will receive a copy of Ricky Mitio’s book and a special commemorative gift bag. Guests will also have the opportunity to meet Ricky Mitio for a personal book signing.
