NEC Endorses National Social Media Policy 2025
The National Executive Council (NEC) has approved the National Social Media Policy 2025 on October 2, 2025, to create a safer online environment for Papua New Guineans.
Acting Minister for Information and Communications Technology, Peter Tsiamalili Jnr, shared that this policy establishes clear guidelines for responsible social media use.
Under the new policy, all citizens aged 14 and above will need to use a digital ID to access social media, ensuring secure online participation.
A classification system will also be introduced to set content standards based on age.
Immediate actions include forming a National e-Safety Directorate to monitor harmful content and misinformation, along with an Interim Inter-Agency Taskforce to manage the implementation process.
Social media platforms in Papua New Guinea will be required to legally register, comply with local laws, and ensure transparency.
Awareness campaigns will educate citizens, especially young people, on safe online practices.
The policy aims to balance freedom of expression with user safety, protecting individuals from online abuse and misinformation while promoting responsible use of social media for communication and national development.
