A defining pic of Mr. Dickson Hiahowi performing his customary role on behalf of his siblings and family, towards supporting his first cousins for their customary obligations during their late father and uncle (Wawo) Late Pious George Hiawani's house cry in Mapringa village, Kubalia, East Sepik Province. An enduring customary practice that signifies communal support and is widely observed among the 'Duwo' speaking tribes of East Sepik and across the broader Sepik region. 11.11.25

YEKERE COCOA CUPPING SHOW SETS THE STAGE FOR THE GREATER SEPIK COCOA OF EXCELLENCE SHOW IN 2026

A recent cocoa-cupping show in East Sepik Province attracted over 25 cooperative cocoa groups from across the Greater Sepik region, including rural communities as far-flung as Nuku and Aitape Lumi Districts in West Sepik, and Upper Karawari and Yuat LLGs of Angoram District in East Sepik Province. What made the show even more significant was the presence of 9 Specialty buyers and chocolatiers from the United Kingdom, who attended through the ongoing support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) under the EU-STREITPNG Programme, a UN-led initiative dedicated to improving cocoa and vanilla quality and production in the Sepik provinces.

Hosted by the Yekere Cooperative Society in Baimuru Village of Yangoru-Sausia District, East Sepik Province, the two-day event served as the main lead-up event for the much-anticipated “Greater Sepik Cocoa of Excellence Show” to be held in Wewak in 2026.

As the challenge of maintaining high cocoa prices increasingly weighs on cocoa farmers and regulatory bodies such as the Cocoa Board of Papua New Guinea (CBPNG) and the Provincial Department of Agriculture and Livestock (DAL), negotiating direct cocoa trade and partnerships with chocolatiers has emerged as a key pathway to maintain quality, quantity and consistency in the region’s cocoa value-chain. This, in turn, helps stabilise local prices at favourable rates so farmers can enjoy the full profits of their hard work.

Trading directly with international buyers means that our local farmers meet their trading partners’ quality and quantity requirements-leading to stronger consistency and, hence, higher payment rates for the farmers.

All of this was made possible through the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) under the European Union in Papua New Guinea funded EU-STREIT PNG programme , the CBPNG, the Provincial DAL and with the full backing of the East Sepik Provincial Administration.

Meanwhile, preparations for the Greater Sepik Cocoa of Excellence Show are underway, led by the FAO under EU-STREIT PNG and the Cocoa Board of PNG, working in collaboration with the East and West Sepik Provincial Administrations.

The show is anticipated to be the largest ever held in the country, given the recent cocoa boom, and is expected to attract more international trade visitors-including visitors from our cocoa-producing provinces as well as national chocolatiers and entrepreneurs.

During dry seasons, fishing is made easier in and along the Sepik River. Fish are concentrated into smaller water bodies. Spears, traps and nets become very effective in catching fish. However, as dry season continues, the risk of having very limited to zero fish supply if very high given the fact that lakes and streams gradually dry out. The first month of dry season is always the best with households harvesting surplus of fish and hence, the abundance fish supply is preserved for consumption and sale using the traditional drying/smoking methods.

Numerous biodiversity research indicated that the Sepik River alone is the host for over 200 bird species. It is further estimated that almost 400 more remained undocumented. During dry seasons, birds of all kind flocked into dried out lakes to breed and nests. The scenery is usually breathtaking during these times.

Communities within the tributaries of Sepik River continue to face difficulties, navigating their way into mainstream Sepik River due to block waterways. Proper access to basic health and education services, including markets have been their major concern for decades. Julius, a cocoa farmer from Kaningara Village in the upper Karawari tributaries of the Sepik shared their experience of transporting their cocoa down to Tambunum waterfront to transport into Wewak to sell.
