A rip current is a strong, narrow flow of water that moves away from the shore and out toward deeper water. It often forms when waves pile up water near the beach, and that water finds a path back to the ocean through a gap in sandbars or reefs.

Why it’s dangerous

Rip currents can pull swimmers away from the beach very quickly. They are responsible for many beach rescues because people often try to swim directly back to shore and become exhausted.

How to recognize a rip current

Look for:

* A channel of choppy or darker water between areas of breaking waves
* A gap in the line of incoming waves
* Water carrying foam, seaweed, or debris steadily away from shore

What to do if caught in one

1. Stay calm.
2. Don’t swim directly against the current toward shore.
3. Swim parallel to the shoreline until you are out of the current.
4. Then swim back to shore at an angle.
5. If you can’t escape, float or tread water and signal for help.

Rip currents usually do not pull you underwater; they pull you away from the beach. The greatest danger is panic and exhaustion.
