The Laboratory High School welcomed new and returning students as they stepped onto campus for their first day of school on July 7, 2025.

New students mingled with different faces as excitement filled the air, as some looked around nervously, trying to find their assigned rooms, while others smiled brightly as they reunited with friends they hadnโ€™t seen all summer.

Guided by their teachers and with support from one another, the LHS community is ready to face the upcoming challengesโ€”together.

High School is a transformative chapter for every student, and LHS has opened its doors for usโ€”Batch โ€˜25.

As loud as the teacherโ€™s voice,
As clear as the writings on the board,
Every lesson taught and gained at the LHS classrooms,
Forever marked clearly within, and echoed loudly beyond the walls

It feels like it was just yesterday when we were running through the halls of the LHS building as grade 7 students, with hungry minds that were eager to learn everything within grasp. We were the youngest section in the LHS, one that is claimed to be the most handful groupโ€”initially comprising 53 students, the most in a section back then. From the second floor to the first, through the corridors, voices echoed from the grade 7 room. We were the new ones, yet we adapted quickly with the guidance of our teachers and the connection made with our classmates. Entering the halls of LHS, we start a new chapter in our academic journey as we venture to the path of Junior High School.

Time quickly shifts from being the youngest students to being the eldest Junior High School students. A time skip caused by the pandemic that altered the mode of learning, forcing students to learn and to make bonds virtually. Two years of facing the screen, relying on the internet signal, dragging ourselves to attend every Google meeting, and keeping our eyes open until the 11:59 pm deadlineโ€”it was after two years when we were back to the halls of LHS, now as grade 10 students navigating the new normal with a few โ€œsee you aroundโ€ phrases uttered along the way. It was here where friendships and togetherness thrived. We had teamwork strengthening group projects, from role-play to the short films per group and musical as a class, even dressing up as characters of Jose Rizalโ€™s El Filibusterismo. Junior High School has taught us how forming connections and bonds with our classmates help us grow as a person, realizing that we donโ€™t need to be alone in our battles and that trust within our group in activities makes it easier to deliver a quality output.

As we exchange our costumes for the white Junior toga, we reminisce about the moments we have had for the past 4 years, how we evolved as students, with 49 students leaving as Junior High School Completers of Batch 2023. We bid our goodbyes and hope for a renewed time with one another as we start a new page in high school. Enrolling for Senior High School had its ups and downs, with limited slots for two sections; STEM with 25 students and HUMSS with 19 after enrollment. It was two rooms filled with old and new faces, teaming up to make the two years of Senior High School fun and memorable. Building new relationships and strengthening the old ones as we start anew.

Our batch was lucky to have two strands available for grabsโ€”honing both future STEM Scientists and HUMSS Scholars. With STEM immersing in science and mathematics, and HUMSS immersing in social science-based subjects, it was an opportunity for growth and learning from both personal and shared experiences within the two sections. There might not be another set of HUMSS students to grace the LHS building, but the last batch leave a lasting impact as they carry on to uphold the lessons they learned towards their future endeavors. And as we leave the halls, may our batch serve as a testament to our fellow succeeding STEM students that if we can, so can they.

Being a student here at the LHS since grade 7 until grade 12 has given us the privilege to represent the school and carry its name on various competitions. Our batch has been active in both academics and in various extracurricular activities. To be able to act and think fast on quiz bees and collaborate with the group. To be able to write and broadcast facts, knowledge, and events through the power of journalism with digital and traditional media. To be able to excel physically and tactically in combative and ball games, aiming for the gold. To be able to express through music and art, showcasing the talents of the LHSians on stage. Competitions are not just about winning, but also about learning and representing the school. To be able to learn with fellow LHSians and coaches; gaining relationships which fosters camaraderie and social interaction with others. The chance given to us to represent not just the LHS banner, but also DMMMSU and even La Union is a feat worth notingโ€”a feat the past, present, and future LHSians uphold.

Ideally, it was a total of six years of learning within the walls of the Laboratory High School building, six years that have been cut short into four years due to the pandemic, but nevertheless, it was six years of unforgettable high school life filled with memoriesโ€”a roller coaster of emotionsโ€”that shaped the people we are today. As we graduate from Senior High School, with our maroon Senior toga, and leave the grounds of the school that have been our second home for the past yearsโ€”four years of Junior High School and two years of Senior High School. The grounds we have walked, the buildings we have passed, the memories we have created, and the lessons we have learned will forever be part of who we areโ€”not just as an incoming college students, but also as individuals who have been shaped through the lessons that transcend beyond the walls of Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University - South La Union Campus Laboratory High School.

Kasalukuyan man silang waitlisted sa UP Baguio, ang kanilang pangarap ay mananatiling umaalab at matatagโ€”pusoโ€™t isip ay hindi magpapatinag.

Sa kabila man ng walang kasiguraduhan, may anino man ng โ€œbakaโ€, โ€œsiguroโ€, at โ€œpaano kungโ€ โ€”para sa isang mag-aaral na puno ng pangarap at dedikasyon, kahit gaano man kahirap at kailangan mang maghintay kahit hindi sigurado lahat ay gagawin at tatahakin. Kalakip man nito ay takot at alinlanganโ€”buti at sinubukan mo. โ€

While weโ€™re already feeling the devastating effects of human-caused climate change, governments and individuals continue to fall short in making efforts to lessen the factors that worsen our climate. Mass emissions of greenhouse gases from unreasonably excessive use of motor vehicles and factories, tons of daily plastic usage from consumers are accumulated in landfills and improper disposals, and the unsustainable use of resources to supply the need for each inadequacy. All of these innovations and tradeoffs that we partake in are all needed and beneficial at first, but in the long run, it becomes detrimental. Although environmental activists and experts have given their utmost effort to share awareness regarding this consequential step we take, we are still doing it willingly and recklessly even though we are living in its consequential times. This issue should be pondered more for the futureโ€™s sake and think of what will our world look like if we continue marching on this current path?

Right now, it is impossible to know exactly how the next decade will unfold, however, scientists and experts have made countless reports, factoring the sequence of global events to predict our future state. With rising global temperatures, widespread blackouts and city fires arise as power grids struggle to keep up with the energy demand to bring comfort and cool off homes and buildings. Night hours in hot countries, such as Africa and Southwestern US, blare sirens throughout the night as ambulances carry patients suffering from heatstroke and dehydration. Countries surrounded by water, such as the Philippines and Japan, face more frequent heavy rainfall as rising temperature invites more evaporation from bodies of water.

As the climate becomes more detrimental on a global scale, affecting nations across the globe, some communities are not resilient enough to keep up with the pace of climate change. Fruits and products grown in tropics will rarely show up, even in seasons, as intense heat paired with increasing humidity affects plant growth and farmersโ€™ safety to work outdoors, resulting in unprecedented levels of poverty, hunger, famine, and death by starvation.

The question of whether climate change is happening to us is no longer up for debate. It has become a reality backed by burning anecdotes and scientific evidence. As we emit harmful gases to a greater extent and pollute the earth with plastic waste, the time to ask whether climate change is real should come to an end. There is no time to ask, we should act now or else, the world as we live it today will be a slurry of hot pollution. As students and young people whose future is also affected by climate change, we can help by listening to experts and acting on science and humanity to mitigate the effects of climate change. Fighting climate change has been pivotal to society nowadays, and enacting a real change will require bold and innovative solutions matched with the populationโ€™s collective effort.

Have we realized that the sun burns more now than it was, that it has become hotter now than when it was, and the climate pattern has horribly changed affecting our school days. The need for change is now, start with turning off the lights when itโ€™s not being used, start counting drops of water, use biodegradable products and avoid unnecessary use of plastics, and start walking if itโ€™s only a short distance. The world is changing and so should we. After all, the time to act is now.

Creating Earth's scar and nature's canvas, a striking beauty forced by volcanoesโ€”the big mountains that sleep for a long time for centuries, then awaken with great power. Capable of huge destruction, causing damage with a power both terrifying and impressive. Volcanoes are mountains formed from volcanic materials; they are openings in the Earth's surface where magma, molten rock, ash, and gases escape from underground chambers. Even though it can be destructive, the volcano leaves behind a landscape of stunning beauty and forces that build things up in the end, which shapes our planet, but how?

Beneath the volcano, pressure increases within the magma chamber, and the gases trapped in the magma expand, ultimately causing a big explosion. During eruptions, volcanoes release large amounts of gases and aerosols, including carbon dioxide, sulfur, and ash. The release of carbon dioxide contributes to climate change because it's a greenhouse gas. These are atmospheric gases that trap heat, warming our planet. Not only that, but a volcanic activity's impact is catastrophic; destroying vegetation, buildings, animals, and harming people's livelihoods. Volcanic ash makes the soil unable to grow things at first, but over time, it enriches the soil with minerals. While water sources become polluted with ash and chemicals, which affects aquatic life and makes the water unsafe to drink.

Dangerous yet beautiful, volcanoes aren't all bad news. For example, among the world's most famous volcanoes are two in the Philippines: the near-perfectly cone-shaped Mount Mayon and Taal Volcanoโ€”a beautiful island in a lake. Volcanoes never fail to impress with their beauty. At the same time, it also plays a very important role in shaping our world, creating new lands and islands. Moreover, volcanic rocks contain minerals that add nutrients to the soil, making it ideal for agricultureโ€”like a natural fertilizer. With its rock formations and the lava flowing from a volcano, it attracts people from around the world with its beauty, offering many different kinds of land to explore and admire.

Volcanoes are powerful forces of nature with two sides. While its eruptions can be disastrous, causing extensive destruction and environmental damage, it contributes significantly in shaping our planet's landscapes and enriching its ecosystems. The formation of new land, soil fertilization, and the unusual rock formations constructed, all add to the beauty and biodiversity of the Earth. To truly understand volcanoes, we need to see both its great power and the ability to create beautiful things. This helps us appreciate the complexity of how they shape our world.
