Fairies and Fantasy Realms: A Whimsical Sidecar Parade Honoring Teachers

On the morning of October 2, the quiet streets of Alabat Island awoke to the rhythm of drums, laughter, and the hum of sidecars turned into canvases of imagination. At Alabat Island National High School (AINHS), Teacher’s Day took flight spectacularly as students unveiled their gratitude through a parade that blurred the lines between fiesta and fantasy, where cosmic journeys, enchanted forests, and Filipino icons rolled side by side in celebration of their mentors.

For years, Teacher’s Day at AINHS meant heartfelt letters, classroom celebration, and programs. But since 2018, students dared to dream bigger. Drawing inspiration from the festive spirit of island barangay celebrations, Grades 7 to 12 transformed the tradition into a “Parade of Wonders,” weeks in the making. Each sidecar became a throne, each booth a stage, and each teacher a celebrated star.

A Kaleidoscope of Themes

The procession kicked off with the school’s drumline leading teachers seated regally in sidecars. They waved to townsfolk lining the coastal roads, while students danced alongside in colorful costumes. Returning to campus, the sidecars anchored at themed booths that reflected the imagination and dedication of each grade level:
• Grade 12 RMI (Space Odyssey): Papier-mâché planets orbited around stars, with a rocket labelling a gratitude to their teacher, ready for lift-off. Teacher posed in a “zero-gravity” photo zone, guided by students in makeshift astronaut suits.
• Grade 10 SSC PAA (Enchanted Forest): Recycled materials became fairy-lit trellises, driftwood formed woodland paths, and students in mushroom crowns gifted “magic wands” (flower stem) so teacher Pilar would feel like a fairy.
• Grade 12 JLC (Encantadia): Inspired by the Filipino fantasy epic, this booth crowned teachers as wisdom’s guardians, seating them on a Mineave throne with silver props. Dramatizing Ma’am Joyce Cuartero’s role as protector of knowledge.
• Grade 11 JRT (Jeepney Joyride): A patriotic ride through local culture, the booth featured a sidecar-turned-jeepney with hand-painted okir and garlands. Sir Jeffrey Tapan rang pugon horns before being served steaming respect and love from his students.
• Grade 11 AGP (One Piece Treasure): Anime fans turned their booth into a pirate ship adventure. The team solved riddles along the “Grand Line” to unlock chests of personalized scrolls—unveiling their creativity.

Teachers, meanwhile, described the parade as both humbling and heartwarming. “I felt like a fairy riding through town,” said Ms. Pilar, laughing through tears. “But more than that, I felt seen and valued by my students.”

More Than a Parade

As the last confetti settled, the event left behind more than just photos and glitter. It became a testament to the creativity of Alabat’s youth and the enduring bond between teachers and students. By blending Filipino heritage with global imagination, the celebration reminded everyone that gratitude need not be confined to classrooms or cards—sometimes, it can ride proudly down the streets in a sidecar, carrying joy for the whole community to see

AINHS Benchmarks Best Practices in Lucena to Uplift Rural Farm School Program

Teachers and Parent-Teacher Officer representatives from Alabat Island National High School (AINHS) visited Mayao Parada Agricultural Integrated High School to benchmark best practices in Rural Farm School (RFS) implementation. The visit aimed to gather insights and strategies to enhance the RFS program at AINHS, held at Mayao Parada, Lucena City, Sept. 24.

The benchmarking event commenced with opening remarks from Sherin D. Bustamante, the teacher-in-charge of Mayao Parada Agricultural Integrated High School. Bustamante emphasized the importance of dedication and heartfelt commitment in ensuring the sustainability and success of the RFS program.

Hon. Evelyn D. Ramos, the Barangay Captain of Mayao Parada, extended a warm welcome to the participants, expressing her hope that they would enjoy their time at the school.

Rural Farm School Curriculum
Criselda M. Rioflorido, the JHS RFS Coordinator, provided a detailed explanation of the legal bases for RFS and the class schedule. She highlighted the collaborative effort of the RFS core team in drafting the curriculum through focused group discussions.

Rioflorido also shared practical insights into how students engage in hands-on farming activities, including the planting of vegetables such as mustasa, eggplant, tomato, and okra.

The students maintain journals to record their work during these practical sessions. She further emphasized the success of RFS, citing various awards won in the division of Lucena City.

Rural Farm Best School Practices
Donna Liza D. Cutanda, SHS Teacher II- TVL Teacher, discussed the integration of RFS across various subjects, particularly in SHS courses, eSP, MAPEH, and English. She noted the diverse range of plants cultivated as part of the program.

Activities under RFS include land clearing, land preparation, seed sowing, mulching, transplanting, clearing and maintenance through watering, weeding, fertilizer and pesticide application, harvesting, and the marketing and utilization of the harvest.

Farm technicians assist and monitor the students throughout these activities. Cutanda also highlighted that 24 out of the 28 teaching personnel have completed TESDA training.

Integration of RFS in Four Pillars
Renzdolf M. Villanueva, SHS Master Teacher I, emphasized the importance of the four pillars in anchoring the RFS implementation: alternance system, integrated formation, responsible association, and rural community development. He stated that without these pillars, the goals of the RFS program would not be achieved.

Gratitude and Future Implementation
School Principal IV of AINHS, Mrs. Leilani A. Pregellana, expressed her gratitude for the acceptance and opportunity to learn from Mayao Parada Agricultural Integrated High School.

“We need improvement in implementation of RFS. Sana ay maraming kaalaman tayong mai-uwi (I hope we can bring home a lot of knowledge),” she said, underscoring the school's commitment to enhancing its RFS program.

Dalubhasaang Pagsasanay:
◦ Master in Business Administration, De La Salle University (1987)
◦ Master in Management, Philippine Christian University (1995)

ISANG MANDIRIGMA, ISANG DIPLOMATIKO
