Kumpas Alabat Project Turns Over ₱110,300 Worth of Rondalla Instruments to Alabat Island National High School
In a historic cultural milestone, Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Fernando L. Mesa formally turned over ₱110,300 worth of Rondalla instruments to Alabat Island National High School, as part of the district-wide project Kumpas Alabat. The initiative aims to nurture local talent and bring music to life through the artistry of young Alabateños.
Through the support of former Mayor Mesa, Jocelyn Vargas-Hirt, and Mrs. Susane Krause, the school received a set of Rondalla instruments, valued at ₱110,300. The Kumpas Alabat project was established to revive and sustain the cultural heritage of Alabat by giving the youth opportunities to explore and express themselves through music. August 22, 2025.
“Actually, the original plan was to create a music room. Joce and I had discussed this a long time ago, but we eventually decided to form a Rondalla group here in Alabat instead. This decision shows that everything starts with a dream and with hard work, those dreams can come true. If you stay dedicated and work for your dream, it will surely happen. The budget is not what matters most; what truly matters is that there are children who are willing to learn and are interested in music,” said Maj. Gen. Mesa in his message.
Mesa personally donated ₱20,000, Vargas-Hirt provided another ₱20,000, while Krause, a close friend of Vargas-Hirt, contributed the largest share amounting to ₱70,300. These funds made possible the acquisition of the Rondalla instruments, which will be used by students in the official launch and future performances of Kumpas Alabat.
“Alabat is super lucky because most of our stakeholders are very generous, especially when it comes to supporting our school community,” said School Principal IV Leilani A. Pregellana in her welcoming remarks.
The Kumpas Alabat project is led by Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Fernando L. Mesa, who also served as Mayor of Alabat, Quezon for nine years; renowned alumna Jocelyn Vargas-Hirt of AINHS; District Supervisor Melanie D. Bonquin; and School Principal IV Leilani A. Pregellana. Trainers include Ma’am Mary Grace Paredes, Sir Oliver Luna, and Kier Evangelista from MAPEH Department.
In a message relayed through Ma’am Paredes, Vargas-Hirt encouraged students to enjoy playing music and not be discouraged, reminding them that the island is fortunate to have an authentic Rondalla group.
The ceremonial signing of documents was conducted live on stage, witnessed by honored guests, teachers, and students. The event was highlighted by an impressive Rondalla performance from Grade 8 students, who prepared in just eight hours, as well as a vibrant interpretative dance presentation by Grade 11 Arts & Design.
