Despite the Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TWCS) No. 1 signal in Isabela due to Tropical Depression Mirasol, the Drug Resistance Education and Medical Support (DREAMS) program pressed on to enlighten students about Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) stigma at the university gymnasium today.
Dr. Gilbert L. Claveria, Jr., from the Department of Health (DOH) Treatment and Rehabilitation Center, emphasized the struggles commonly faced by people with HIV and AIDS.
"The biggest barrier in understanding HIV and AIDS is stigma and discrimination [resulting to isolation]," Claveria stated, highlighting that people with HIV/AIDS must be seen as individuals, "not as their disease".
Claveria further urged the students to raise awareness to their community, underscoring the importance of HIV testing as a first step in raising a stigma-free community.
Meanwhile, the western and northern parts of Isabela remain under TWCS No. 1 as Mirasol continues to traverse northern Luzon, according to the 5 PM weather bulletin of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA).
