My entry for CFM 2025.
Inspired by the basketry of the Cordilleras, the two-tiered cake is made from whipped buttercream and American buttercream.
Cordillera basketry, a traditional craft from the mountainous regions of the Philippines, is renowned for its intricate patterns and sturdy designs. These baskets, often woven from natural materials like rattan and bamboo, reflect the rich cultural heritage and artisanal skills of the Cordillera people. The geometric patterns and earthy tones of Cordillera baskets are the inspiration for this 2-tiered cake.
The bottom tier is patterned after the Ifugao "baki," a container traditionally woven from rattan, prized for its craftsmanship and utility. These baskets are used to store rice and other grains, keeping them safe and dry. The top tier is patterned after "aggawin," a Kalinga basket used for gathering snails, small fish, and eggs, and worn by women during rice cultivation.
