There are certain rules in school that need to be followed in order for students to learn important values like respect, honesty, discipline, and many more. These rules aim to protect the students from any sort of harm. But sometimes students feel that it is over the top and is preventing them from showing their true selves. Just like how some schools do not allow students to wear makeup.

A lot of people would disagree with this rule, especially students who wear makeup in school every day. There is nothing wrong with using cosmetics, as long as you're not using them excessively. It doesn't really affect anyone or anything, so why should they stop? They are wearing makeup for themselves, not for others.

Behind every makeup and trendy clothes are students who are full of insecurities and flaws. The younger generation, regardless of the gender, use makeup to hide all the imperfections on their face. Thus, making them feel more confident about expressing themselves. And if they feel confident, they perform better academically.

According to the research of Palumbo et al. (2017), makeup has a potential impact on academic performance through self-esteem. Their study shows that those who wore makeup in school during the examination scored higher than those who did not wear makeup. It shows that makeup does not really affect students in a bad way, but rather it helps them even more.

However, many schools still do not allow students to wear makeup in school. They believe that it is to maintain a focused environment by minimizing distractions, promoting uniformity, and preventing the younger students from getting sexualized. A report by the National Center of Education Statistics found that having strict dress code policies and makeup restrictions in schools results in fewer reports about instances of bullying and social conflicts.

These institutions want to protect the students from peer pressure and high beauty standards. And being strict in order for students to learn is not bad at all. But some teachers and staff take things a little too far, thinking of solutions that can cause the students to feel humiliated in front of all their schoolmates. In some cases, teachers and other school staff carry wet wipes to erase the "unwanted products" on students' faces. Sometimes they don't even allow students to enter their class if they even have a glimpse of makeup on their face (Cockcroft, MailOnline, 2016).

Is that how they get learners to follow the rules? by humiliation and fear? Students should follow the rules of their own will, not because they are afraid of being embarrassed in front of all their peers. They are simply doing what they love, so why should they feel embarrassed about wearing makeup in school? Also, it does not affect their ability to learn anything; makeup changes your appearance, not your ability to learn and comprehend.

For schools to get the students to follow their rules. They should establish clear guidelines for makeup wear in school, and they should explain it in a way that does not offend or shame students for wearing makeup. Secondly, allowing students to wear more natural makeup could also lessen the argument about it. Furthermore, giving them the chance to participate in the decision-making about makeup is also a good idea; it allows them to voice out their feelings and opinions. Students should not feel ashamed of expressing how they feel if it really affects them, and school should also create a more comfortable atmosphere for the students to voice out their thoughts.

In a vibrant celebration of movement, grace, and school spirit, Bonifacio V. Romero High School hosted its much-awaited Dancesport competition as part of the 2025 Intramurals. The event brought together talented student pairs competing in Cha-Cha, Rumba, and Jive, captivating the audience with rhythm, precision, and heart-pounding performances.

The competition was so intense that the final performances had to be repeated, as the battle for the top spot was too close to call. Each team gave their all, making it even harder for the judges to decide the winners.

After a thrilling showdown, Grade 11 Purple Phoenixโ€™s Jhadielyn Mendoza and Jabez Tuazon emerged as the champions, impressing the crowd and judges with their chemistry, technique, and stage presence. What made their victory even more remarkable was that it was their first time joining a dancesport competition.

โ€œI was so excited because dancing has always been my hobby,โ€ shared Jhadielyn. โ€œBut I was also nervous when I saw how hard it is. When it was time for the competition, I just enjoyed it. I didnโ€™t expect that we would win.โ€

Jabez also shared his thoughts on the experience:

โ€œAt first, it was challenging because I didnโ€™t have any idea about dancesport,โ€ he said. โ€œBut as we performed, I started to enjoy it and learned a lot from the experience. It was a fun and memorable experience.โ€

Grade 10 claimed second place, delivering a powerful and energetic routine that pushed the final results into a tight showdown, while Grade 12 secured third place with a graceful and well-executed performance.

This yearโ€™s Dancesport competition was more than just a contestโ€”it was a showcase of rising talent, perseverance, and the thrill of competition. From first-timers to seasoned dancers, each performer left their mark on the floor. And for Jhadielyn and Jabez, their first try turned into a memorable victoryโ€”one that will surely inspire others to take the stage next year.

As the music faded and the cheers echoed through the gym, one thing was clear: Dancesport had not only entertainedโ€”it united the students through artistry, courage, and the joy of doing something they love. The spirit of Bonifacio V. Romero High School danced just as brightly as the performers themselves.

Compassion must yield to accountability at some point. That point is here. The burgeoning tide of hideous crimes perpetrated by children requires us to rethink our justice system. Senator Robin Padillaโ€™s bill to reduce the minimum age of criminal responsibility from 15 to 10 is not harsh punishment of children, it is an ugly acknowledgment of reality. In this age of technology, childhood is no longer the same. When a 12-year-old can learn about cryptocurrency, use the dark web, or plot violence, can we still feign ignorance about their inability to appreciate right from wrong?

The Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act (RA 9344) was designed with noble intentions โ€” to save children from the cruelty of the criminal justice system. But intentions fail to equate with outcomes. These years have seen such protection abused. Criminal gangs recruit children, aware that theyโ€™ll get off scot-free. Juvenile offenders, aware of their immunity, indulge in serious offenses without fear of retribution. This is not justice. Itโ€™s a loophole that justifies criminal activity under the cover of innocence. By reducing the age of criminal responsibility, the law merely communicates one message loud and clear: no age is too young to be held accountable when the crime is grave.

Todayโ€™s children are no longer the children of yesterday. Several studies indicate that the virtual world has fast-tracked the cognitive and emotional maturation of children. A 2023 report by the International Journal of Child and Adolescent Development discovered that kids who are exposed to digital media at an early age have more advanced moral reasoning and decision-making at an earlier age than other generations. Lead researcher Dr. Elise Tanaka notes that, โ€œThe constant access to information and simulation of real-world scenarios through technology has significantly advanced childrenโ€™s understanding of consequences, empathy, and social dynamics.โ€

This means that a child today is far more mentally equipped to understand the gravity of actions than one twenty years ago. Ignoring this shift is not compassion, it is negligence.

Critics of the bill say kidsโ€™ brains arenโ€™t developed yet and that introducing them to the justice system would traumatize, not rehabilitate. They say that rehabilitation, and not jail, is the solution โ€” and that criminal children are victims themselves, who have been influenced by poverty, abuse, or neglect.

However, a childโ€™s history should not be a justification for heinous crimes such as human/drug trafficking, r**e, or murder. Thereโ€™s a distinction between tolerating impunity and understanding context. Nobodyโ€™s proposing life sentences for 10-year-olds. The bill still promotes rehabilitation, but with strong repercussions. Rehabilitation needs to be accompanied by responsibility, not in place of it. And trauma isnโ€™t cured by allowing a child to commit offenses again; trauma is cured by ordered intervention, accountability, and confrontation with the effect of their behavior.

In addition, the proposed justice system of the bill is not punitive. It advocates for intense rehabilitation programs, social intervention, and suspended sentencing for non-heinous offenses. It only guarantees that children committing heinous crimes no longer get away unpunished.

Itโ€™s time to stop romanticizing childhood as a shield against justice. What we need is a blended model of accountability. One that enforces the law but incorporates new, science-based strategies for rehabilitation. Dedicated juvenile courts, psychological assessment, and sentencing that focus on rehabilitation need to go hand in hand with this bill. Those who commit crimes should be trialed, not as adults โ€” but through a parallel legal process that assures both accountability and rehabilitation.

The face of crime has altered and so has the face of the criminal. That 12-year-old with an internet connection is no longer an innocent child. When children sell drugs, r**e or murder they are not simply victims of circumstance, theyโ€™re complicit in crime. Justice has to adapt to this new reality.

Reducing the age of criminal responsibility is not about punishing children. Itโ€™s about safeguarding society, reestablishing justice, and recognizing that contemporary childhood is no longer innocent by default. Let us cease questioning whether children should be held criminally responsible. Let us ask โ€” if not now, then when?

If thereโ€™s one word to describe him, it would be โ€œhumbleโ€. And now, Bonifacio V. Romero Senior High School welcomes its newly appointed Assistant Principal II for Senior High Schoolโ€”Sir Jayson G. Guzman.

Sir Jaysonโ€™s leadership is defined by humility, dedication, and hands-on commitment. Despite his position, he remains approachable and discerning, knowing when to delegate tasks yet still willing to handle even the simplest duties himself.

For instance, he would personally inform meeting attendees rather than assign the task to others. As Maโ€™am Michelle, SSLG Adviser, describes him: โ€œSoft-spoken but firm.โ€ He upholds discipline, steps into classes when teachers are absent, and ensures that lesson plans, test papers, and attendance are all well-prepared and properly managed.

One colleague even recalls meeting him back in Holy Angel University, noting how he reminded her of her college days filled with studies, competitions, and friends.

But who is Sir Jayson beyond his role today?

Coming from humble beginnings, he is the second eldest of five children. He began his studies in a public elementary school in Sto. Rosario later became a working student at Holy Angel University for high school, where he also pursued his college education.

Though he initially dreamed of becoming a Mechanical Engineer, fate steered him toward Education, a path he learned to love. By his third year in college, he was already displaying his leadership potential as Chairman of the Student Council.

His career began in 2004 at FGNMHS, where he served as English Club Adviser and later as School Paper Adviser for The Vanguard. He pursued his masterโ€™s degree at Bulacan State University while working as a Teacher III, eventually becoming Head Teacher and Officer-in-Charge at Leoncia Village Integrated School.

From there, he became an Assistant Principal at Sto. Domingo Integrated School, later served at ACNTS, and now continues his journey at BVRHS. Looking back, he reflects: โ€œMasaya, okay naman, fulfilling kasi marami kang nadaanan na trials and challengesโ€ฆ every school is unique, iba-iba yung teachers, iba-iba yung mga qualities.โ€

His guiding principle is clear:

โ€œYou are not here to be served; you are here to serve them.โ€ For him, leadership is not about authority but servanthood. He sees teachers as colleagues, students as his children, and always works for their welfare. โ€œI want my teachers to be happyโ€ฆ that they enjoy while they are working,โ€ he says.

Challenges do exist, especially in staying humble and adapting to changes, such as the MATATAG curriculum. Yet he remains firm in his commitment: โ€œAs a leader, I want to inspire them para โ€˜di sila ma-disheartened.โ€

Moreover, true success is not measured by material things or titles, but by fulfillment and shared effort. โ€œSuccess is di mo ma-achieve yan ng mag-isa. Naniniwala ako sa 'it takes a village to educate a child'.โ€ He acknowledges that every recognition is the fruit of collaboration among teachers, students, and the community.

He believes teaching is truly a vocation. โ€œThey should be patient, understanding, broad-minded, they should persevere in everything they do, and show their best in fulfilling a goal.โ€ His advice to future educators.

He reminds others never to give up despite hardships. โ€œWhen you fall, you need to know how to get back up gracefully. Be ready to fail, because in failure you learn and get stronger.โ€

A servant leader with both compassion and firmness, he believes in balance:

โ€œYou must have a listening ear, a good heart, pero dapat there will be times when you will be strict.โ€ His leadership emphasizes discipline, consistency, and never giving up on students.
To keep improving, he studies, reads, and reflects on his daily service. For him, every day is another opportunity to grow as a leader.

In the end, he holds on to one lesson:

โ€œWhat other people say about you doesnโ€™t define who you are.โ€ People will criticize youโ€ฆ You need to know yourself, believe in yourself, and never give up on your dreams and goals.โ€

With humility, resilience, and a servantโ€™s heart, Sir Jayson continues to prove that true success is not measured by status but by the lives touched, inspired, and uplifted along the way.

Ipinagbabawal ng batas ang ganitong asal RA 7836 (Philippine Teachers Professionalization Act), RA 7610 (Special Protection of Children Against Abuse), RA 10627 (Anti-Bullying Act), DepEd Child Protection Policy, at Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers.

Schools are meant to be institutions of growth, discipline, and respect. Yet recently, one appalling issue has been emerging in our own school: the growing disrespect by students toward school authorities. Most particularly teachers, janitors, and security guards. As much as defying authority is typically advocated for in democratic settings like schools, the manner in which it is being done these days reflects not critical thinking, but a decline in basic respect and morals.

Everyone on the school staff, teachers, janitors, and guards are crucial to maintaining the functionality of the institution. Teachers educate, janitors clean, and guards give our protection. They work, often behind the scenes, to create a secure and working environment in which to learn. Defying their authority not only violates discipline, but also their humanity and dedication.

When students refuse to follow rules or mock authority figures, the entire discipline system collapses. One such extreme event in our school was when students threw objects at the school guard, fought, and gladly defied or responded to his commands. If this intensifies, soon enough the school will no longer be safe, not physically, but emotionally and socially. Chaos thrives where respect is lost.

Learning to follow rules and authority figures primes students for life. Someday, we'll all be part of workplaces, communities, and governments with cooperation, respect, and hierarchy. School is where we first learn how to function in those systems. Defying all kinds of authority for no good reason doesn't make leadersโ€”entitlement does.

Others would argue that students should be able to protest against rules or dissent against abusive authority. And that sounds sensible. There are times when rules need to be reworked, and there are times when authority becomes abusive. At those times, telling it like it is to power isn't the least bit wrong; it's essential.

Disrespecting, harassing, or speaking back to school staff is not the equivalent of providing channels for meaningful discussion. Student councils, suggestion boxes, and student-teacher forums exist exactly for this. Using disrespect as a method of questioning power only belies student voice.

This is not about discipline, it's about values. We must reinstall a culture of respect in our school, starting with little things: greetings for staff, listening to security guards, thanking janitors, and treating all individuals with dignity. The school administrators, in turn, can provide students safe spaces in which to vent frustrations and pose questions.

Let us remember that challenging authority is part of the learning process, but with empathy and respect is what truly makes us educated.
