โ€œWhat do you want to be when you grow up?โ€ is a common question asked in kindergarten, and from this moment on, many dreams are born within the four corners of the classroom. Teachers are the midwives who help produce knowledge, skills, and even moral values that shape students to be productive members of society. But the classroom is not enough: education begins at home, and when the village abandons its responsibility, teachers are left trying to build futures with tools that were never meant to be theirs alone.

It is disappointing that teachers, once hailed as 'modern-day heroes,' are now blamed for the actions of juveniles who bring harm to society.

But before it all happens, education begins at home, and our first teachers, our parents, teach the first lessons. Not all heroes wear capes, they said, but wearing bulletproof vests should not also be a choice for teachers in a place where violence should not take place.

In the recent shooting incident in Ateneo De Davao wherein a student is the suspect, Atty. Claire Castro, Undersecretary of the Presidential Communications Office, said, โ€œMinsan na po natin nakita, mismo ang ibang mga g**o ay lumalabag sa ganitong klase ng moralidad.โ€ She also added that it is the teachers who demonstrate the immoral acts to the students. What an ironic twist after praising teachers for their immense impact on the development of the country. What is more alarming is when every word she utters resonates with the Presidentโ€™s will; it is not just an opinion, but a reflection of the one who runs the country. Such statements risk shifting accountability toward educators rather than addressing broader social and systemic causes.

This is not when we should point fingers; solutions are the top priorities to discuss at the table. But identifying where it starts matters too, to determine how to put an end to a problem that society aches from. It is not about the video games we play nor where they took place, but the reason behind the intent and factors that fuel the rage. The system is already flawed long before shooting incidents in schools happen, from the substandard facilities to undercompensated teaching professionals, and the experimental teaching strategies handed down to teachers and educators.

Education starts at home; this is where we learn the basic principles that we later carry in our lives. From the basic โ€œpoโ€ and โ€œopoโ€ to saying โ€œsorry,โ€ these lessons are all a product of a home where a child is loved. This reflects a wider failure involving families, communities, institutions, and social support systems. They must guide their students, but they cannot change what was carved long before they entered the classroom.

The African proverb says, "A child who is not embraced by the village will burn it down in order to feel its warmth." In order to fully grow up and become a productive member of our society, it is mainly the surroundings that have the greatest influence upon us; it is within the community, not in school, that we live most of our lives, since it is there that a good example is set and we are taught how to be human. It therefore takes a village to raise a child.

Journalism Bootcamp 2026 Goes Visual: The Pilot Explores Design and Mobile Reporting

San Jose National High School's aspiring campus journalists traded pens for pixels as The Pilot held Day 3 of Journalism Bootcamp 2026, tackling Visual Graphic Design, Editorial Cartooning, and Mobile Journalism.

Francis Orcio opened the session with Visual Graphic Design, breaking down the layout principles that turn a page from cluttered to compelling.

Micah Cenina followed with Editorial Cartooning, proving that a single well-drawn cartoon can enlighten the masses.

Capping the day was Mobile Journalism with Sabine Dizon, who showed participants how to shoot and edit a story using nothing more than a smartphone.

Photojournalism, originally slated for Day 3, has been pushed to Day 4, where it now joins Radio Broadcasting Scriptwriting and Radio Broadcasting Technical for the bootcamp's final leg.
