Ancillary Services drive increase in August 2025 transmission rates

Higher Ancillary Services (AS) costs pushed up transmission rates in August 2025, NGCP announced.

The overall equivalent average transmission rate for the August 2025 billing period rose by 7.09% to PhP1.4171/kWh, up from July’s PhP1.3233/kWh.

AS charges climbed by PhP0.0787/kWh, from PhP0.5872/kWh in July to PhP0.6659/kWh in August.

AS rates are pass-through costs for power supplied by AS providers during supply-demand imbalance. Charges are remitted directly to generating companies with bilateral contracts with NGCP, and to the Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines (IEMOP) for AS sourced from the Reserve Market.

NGCP does not earn from AS and does not benefit from changes in AS prices.

Meanwhile, NGCP’s transmission wheeling rate—or the fee for delivering power through its grid—barely changed, inching up by PhP0.0047/kWh, from PhP0.5923/kWh in July to PhP0.5970/kWh in August.

“For August 2025, NGCP charges only about PhP0.5970/kWh for its transmission service, while Ancillary Services remain the biggest component of transmission-related costs,” the grid operator said.

LifeCare Rizal: Where Compassion Meets Care

The process of aging is an inevitable biological phenomenon marked by a series of progressive physiological and health-related transformations. As individuals advance in age, they become increasingly susceptible to a range of chronic medical conditions that significantly impact their quality of life and functional independence. Among the most prevalent afflictions in the geriatric population are hypertension, osteoarthritis, and cardio-vascular diseases. Furthermore, a considerable subset of older adults experiences cognitive decline, often manifesting in neurodegenerative dis-orders such as Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. A study conducted by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) revealed that 10.6% of elderly Filipinos suffer from undiagnosed dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. This lack of diagnosis often results in delayed treatment and avoidable fatalities. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 85.5% of dementia cases among Filipinos aged 60 and above. Projections suggest that dementia cases may rise to 1.5 million by 2030 and could reach 2.5 million by 2050.

Young Marikeño Speller wins at SM Super Spelling Bee in SM City Marikina

The air was buzzing with excitement last September 6, 2025, as SM City Marikina’s hallway at the Ground Level near Ace Hardware transformed into a live stage for word wizards. More than 180 students from both public and private schools in Marikina gathered for the SM Super Spelling Bee Elimination Round, showcasing not just their spelling skills but also their confidence and love for learning.

Open to Grades 5 and 6 students aged 10 to 12 years old, the competition brought together young learners eager to put their knowledge to the test in front of an enthusiastic crowd of parents, teachers, and mallgoers. After several intense rounds, one young speller stood out among the rest—Zarex Celis of Sta. Elena Elementary School, who emerged as the champion of SM City Marikina’s leg of the competition.

Now on its second year, the SM Super Spelling Bee has grown even bigger with 40 participating SM Supermalls nationwide, serving as a platform where classroom champs and young word enthusiasts can shine and celebrate the joy of words. This year’s edition is made even more meaningful as it coincides with SM Supermalls’ 40th anniversary, a milestone that underscores its commitment to creating spaces where families can shop, dine, learn, and connect through meaningful experiences.

The event was made possible through the support of National Book Store, National University, Power Mac Center, and Jollibee—partners who share in SM’s mission to nurture learning, creativity, and confidence among the youth.

Congratulations once again to Zarex Celis for this well-deserved win! We wish you the best of luck as you advance to the next round of the SM Super Spelling Bee.

MANIFESTING A GREAT SEPTEMBER ✨

NASA shared a dazzling image of a star-forming region called NGC 346, which is located about 200,000 light-years from Earth.

NGC 346 houses thousands of young and newborn stars, according to the space agency.

"The most massive stars in the cluster create powerful winds and produce intense radiation, sculpting the region into an enchanted landscape as seen in this image from Chandra and NASA Hubble," NASA explained in an Instagram post on Saturday. (Instagram/NASA Chandra X-ray Observatory)
