TO OUR CHURCH WORKERS, WE HONOR YOU.
Today, as the nation pauses to recognize the invaluable contributions of its workforce, my thoughts turn with particular gratitude to a unique (and often overlooked) group of laborers: the dedicated individuals who serve within the Church. On this Labor Day, while others might reflect on their daily toils in factories, offices, or fields, my heart goes out to honor those whose workplaces are worship halls and counseling rooms, whose tools are prayers and compassion, and whose ultimate reward transcends any earthly wealth.
It's not uncommon to hear whispers from those who do not fully understand the extent of such high calling these people daily embrace. There are whispers about opportunities that might have offered greater financial compensation elsewhere for them. Many would say these dedicated leaders, with their leading prowess, could have thrived in the corporate world. Numerous voices suggest these tireless volunteers, whose energy and skills could have blossomed in numerous business ventures. Some even muse that these eloquent preachers could have become successful professors or perhaps, charismatic politicians.
Yet, these individuals, and countless others within the halls of the Church, wholeheartedly chose to go against the world’s version of “successful career”; they decided to take the different and less-traveled path. They chose to dedicate their time, their talents, and their very beings to the mission of faith, service, and love.
Most of them earn just a modest living; sometimes, some even offer their services entirely without monetary compensation. In the eyes of the world, they might be seen as forgoing potential wealth, perhaps even wasting their time, talent, and life. But in the eyes of God, their earnings are immeasurable and eternally lasting.
Indeed, what is a fleeting fortune compared to the eternal riches they accumulate by leaving behind everything else that looked valuable to the world so they could serve the Church? Every hymn sung resonates in eternity. Each lesson taught plants seeds for everlasting growth. Every act of charity performed shines as a beacon of divine love. Every mission trip undertaken bridges earthly realms with heavenly purpose. Each administrative task diligently completed lays the groundwork for spiritual impact. These are investments in a spiritual inheritance that knows no earthly bounds. Their labor contributes to a treasure in heaven, where a reward far surpassing any salary or bonus this world could offer awaits them.
Consider the journeys undertaken in service of the Church. While others dream of exotic vacations and far-flung adventures, the true traveler in the spiritual realm is the one who reaches out to those lost in darkness. The pastor tirelessly visits the sick and the grieving, offering solace and strength. Outreach workers selflessly minister to the needy, extending a hand of compassion. Youth leaders passionately reach out and guide the next generation, illuminating their path with faith. Their destinations can’t be marked on a map, yet every step they take is etched in the hearts of those they touch with the love of God that overflows through them. They are reaching not just places, but precious souls yearning for connection, for hope, and for love.
On this Labor Day, let us offer more than just a passing acknowledgment to the workers of the Church. Let us extend sincere gratitude for their unwavering commitment, their selfless service, and their profound impact not just on our communities but on our personal spiritual lives.
They may not always receive the accolades or the financial rewards that the world often bestows. However, their true compensation lies in the lives they touch, the lost souls they lead back to God, the faith they nurture, and the eternal wealth they diligently earn.
Therefore, let us honor them, support them, and recognize the profound value of their sacred work. For in their labor of love, they enrich not just the Church, but the very fabric of our humanity and our eternal destiny.
