The Philippine peso sank to an all-time low of P59.13 against the US dollar on Tuesday, weakening by 23 centavos from its previous close.

This marks its lowest level since October 2022, when it last touched P59 to $1.

The makes it one of the worst-performing currencies in Southeast Asia this month.

In a statement, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said the peso’s recent decline may be partly driven by market concerns over slower economic growth linked to the ongoing infrastructure spending scandal.

"The recent peso depreciation may reflect market concerns over a potential moderation in economic growth due in part to the infra spending controversy, as
well as expectations of additional monetary policy easing by the BSP," BSP said.

Despite the depreciation, the BSP said the currency continues to find some support from robust remittances, steady growth, low inflation, and sustained inflows from business process outsourcing, tourism, and overseas Filipino workers.

Muling binasag ng Philippine peso ang rekord ng pinakamababang halaga sa kasaysayan matapos itong bumagsak sa P59.13 kontra US dollar nitong Martes, Oktubre 28 — ang ika-siyam na sunod na araw ng paghina ng piso sa ilalim ng administrasyong Marcos. Tumaas ito ng 23 sentimos mula sa P58.9 kada dolyar noong Lunes, at lumagpas sa dating all-time low na P59:$1 na naitala noong Disyembre 19, 2024.

Ayon sa Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), ang patuloy na pagbaba ng piso ay bunga ng pangamba ng mga investor sa usapin ng korupsyon, partikular sa maanomalyang flood control projects na kasalukuyang iniimbestigahan ng Kongreso at Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI). Dagdag pa rito, posible rin umanong nakaapekto ang inaasahang monetary policy easing ng BSP sa merkado.

Itinuturing ng ilang ekonomista na nakakaawa ang kalagayan ng Pilipinas sa gitna ng patuloy na pagbagsak ng piso — isang senyales umano ng kawalan ng kumpiyansa sa liderato ni Pangulong Bongbong Marcos at sa direksiyon ng ekonomiya ng bansa. Habang patuloy na lumulubog ang piso, mas lalo namang bumibigat ang pasan ng mga Pilipino sa pagtaas ng presyo ng bilihin at importasyon.
