Here in ๐๐š๐œ๐š๐œ๐š๐ฒ, it has been a customary tradition for local weavers to transform these humble Karagumoy leaves into beautiful creations that carry the heart of Bicolano culture ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿงบ. These leaves are used to make banig (mats), bags, hats, and telescope baskets called โ€œtampipiโ€โ€”the OG suitcases back in the day! ๐Ÿ‘’๐Ÿ‘œโœจ

Theyโ€™re also woven into fancy finds like picture frames, wall pockets, and even traditional slippers ๐Ÿ–ผ๏ธ๐Ÿงถ๐Ÿฉด.

In preparing the fiber, the spiny margins and midribs of the leaves are removed, then the leaves are cut into strips of desired width. The strips are sun-dried and allowed to wilt โ˜€๏ธ. To make them pliable, theyโ€™re rolled under one end of a heavy log, dried again, and thenโ€”ready na for weaving! ๐Ÿชตโœจ

๐‘จ๐‘ณ๐‘จ๐‘ด ๐‘ต๐’€๐‘ถ ๐‘ฉ๐‘จ? ๐Ÿ‘€๐ŸŒฟ
Finely woven mats are used for sleeping, while coarser ones are used to dry copra and rice under the sun ๐ŸŒพโ˜€๏ธ.
The more you know! ๐ŸŒŸ

And if you ever visit Bacacay, donโ€™t just pass throughโ€”come, explore, and bring home a piece of Karagumoy craft ๐Ÿงบ๐Ÿ’š. Supporting our local weavers and small businesses means helping keep this tradition alive for the next generations.
