YELLOW ALERT RAISED OVER VISAYAS GRID

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) placed the Visayas Grid under yellow alert from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 12, due to high system demand and several power plant outages.

NGCP said available capacity was recorded at 2,684 megawatts while peak demand reached 2,512 megawatts.

The grid operator reported that 20 power plants were unavailable, including 11 on forced outage since March 2026, four since 2025, two since 2024, two since 2023, and one plant offline since 2021.

Nine other plants were also operating on derated capacities, resulting in a total of 833MW unavailable to the grid.

Among the plants on forced outage were TVI Unit 1, TVI Unit 2, and PEDC Unit 3.

A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.
