Did the Body of Christ Exist Before Paul?
This is one of those questions that seems small at first…
But once you start looking carefully at the Scriptures, you realize it affects how you understand the entire New Testament.
Was the Body of Christ already in existence before the Apostle Paul?
Or did it begin with the revelation given to Paul?
Let’s slow down.
Let’s open the Scriptures.
And let’s let the Bible define its own terms.
▪️Yes, Paul Persecuted the “Church of God”
Paul openly admits something about his past.
Before his conversion, he was a persecutor.
“For I am the least of the apostles… because I persecuted the church of God.”
— 1 Corinthians 15:9
He repeats the same testimony again:
“Beyond measure I persecuted the church of God, and wasted it.”
— Galatians 1:13
Because of these verses, many assume something automatically:
“If Paul persecuted the church, then the Body of Christ must have already existed.”
But that conclusion depends on one important assumption.
That the phrase “church of God” always means the Body of Christ.
And that assumption deserves a closer look.
▪️“Church” Does Not Always Mean the Body of Christ
The word church simply means an assembly.
It does not automatically identify which program of God the assembly belongs to.
In Acts, there was already a believing assembly connected to Israel’s kingdom program.
Those believers gathered in Jerusalem under the leadership of the Twelve.
Acts even uses the same phrase:
“The church of God which he hath purchased with his own blood.”
— Acts 20:28
But this passage refers to a local assembly connected to Paul’s ministry.
So the term church of God can describe different assemblies in different contexts.
The key question is not merely the word church.
The key question is this:
When does the Bible first reveal the doctrine of the Body of Christ?
