Jean Paul Generoso is now human resources chief of K5 News FM Philippines and its safety officer, too. A seasoned field reporter whose gung-ho spirit remains, Jean Paul found himself trapped inside a station-owned van, ironically, inside the compound of a church where they sought shelter as Typhoon Tino lashed Bacolod earlier this week with strong winds. It was near noontime on the eve of his wife's birthday when the ceiling of the St. Jude Thaddeus Shrine's portico fell on their van, trapping him and two other women reporters. He lived to tell the tale and talks to DNX Executive Editor Julius Mariveles about duty, mission and musings on what it means to be a journalist.

LOOK. Bacolod Mayor Greg Gasataya has issued this executive order establishing the Bacolod City Local Price Coordinating Council to ensure that establishments and businesses will not take advantage of the recent calamity by jacking up prices.

This after his office received reports of "unfair pricing" by business establishments that took advantage of the devastation caused by Typhoon Tino.

Among the tasks of the newly-formed council is to conduct spot checking on both private and public market and stores, verify compliance to pertinent policies as well as detect, document, and recommend enforcement action against price manipulation.

Bacolod Mayor Greg Gasataya has issued an executive order establishing the Bacolod City Local Price Coordinating Council to ensure that establishments and businesses will not take advantage of the recent calamity by jacking up prices.

This after his office received reports of "unfair pricing" by business establishments that took advantage of the devastation caused by Typhoon Tino.

DNX posts in full the statement of the mayor:

In light of reports of unfair pricing and some business establishments taking advantage of the devastation caused by Typhoon Tino, we have issued Executive Order No. 71, establishing the Bacolod City Local Price Coordinating Council (BC-LPCC) which will ensure price and supply stability of basic necessities and prime commodities in Bacolod City.

Any individual or business attempting to manipulate or break pricing regulations will face penalties under the law.

In this time of need, our greatest strength is our kindness to one another. Fair prices can put a warm meal on a hungry family’s table and life-saving medicine into the hands of the sick and elderly. In this moment of trial, let our solidarity shine - we are stronger together.

The Office of the Ombudsman areas hit by Typhoon Tino will be prioritized in its ongoing probe on flood control projects. Assistant Ombudsman Mico Clavano, according to a press release by state-run media outlets, says his office "stands in mourning" with the nation as lives are lost because of the typhoon. He also assured that. Special Task Force has been formed to do precisely this, adding, "Justice will be pursued with compassion, diligence, and resolve."

For days, some Bacolod residents have been reporting a burning smell, which seems odd as there were no fire calls or incidents. Bacolod Mayor Greg Gasataya said in an official statement that this could be "likely" the burning of trees that were cleared after they were felled by strong winds of Typhoon Tino.

Below is the full statement of the Mayor which we print in full:

OFFICIAL STATEMENT
On the Smoke Observed in Bacolod City

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) has confirmed that the smoke seen in some parts of Bacolod City last night was not caused by any fire incidents. It was most likely due to the burning of trees and branches that had been cleared after the recent typhoon.

As the City Government continues with its road clearing and cleanup operations, Mayor Greg G. Gasataya is asking everyone to please avoid burning debris in your backyards. This practice is prohibited by law and can cause health and safety problems for our community.

Instead, the Mayor is encouraging residents to pile up the cleared debris so our garbage collectors can pick them up as soon as possible.

Let’s all do our part as we recover together. Bacolod is stronger when we work as one.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Better safe than sorry. President Bongbong Marcos has ordered the Department for Local and Interior Government to urge LGUs to fully implement preemptive and mandatory evacuations by 9 November 2025 especially on high-risk communities that could be affected by Tropical Storm Fung-Wong. The tropical storm, which will be named Uwan once it enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility, is expected to make landfall on Monday, the Presidential Communications Office said.

State weather bureau PAGASA warns that weather conditions such as heavy rainfall could be expected the day before.

The DILG said LGUs should not wait for conditions to worsen before acting. “We are calling on all local chief executives to complete the evacuation of residents in high-risk areas no later than Sunday. Early evacuation saves lives,” the DILG said, saying LGUs should plan out worst-case or likely scenarios.

“We cannot be complacent. The next 48 hours are crucial for preparedness. We urge everyone to stay informed, follow local advisories, and cooperate with authorities,” the DILG added.

Tales After Tino, an AI assisted story. Terence Peñaflorida, 10, is now an orphan after losing his parents, grandma and three siblings to raging floodwaters that swept through a community in La Castellana town as Typhoon Tino brought rains and strong winds to Negros island early this week, the Bacolod affiliate of K5 News FM Philippines reported. Its reporting chief, Red Salgado, said Terence told him his three brothers, parents and grandmother remain missing after the bamboo pole they were riding on was carried by the strong current. There are initial reports his mother was one of the bodies found in nearby Moises Padilla town a day after the storm hit. He, however, managed to ride a floating log, passed through a local cemetery until a schoolteacher helped him to safety at a nearby public school.
