“Journalists,” the first thing that comes to the minds of many: deliverers of news. But actually, journalists are merely not writers or reporters—they’re more than that. The cornerstone that they’ve established their passion upon—it transcends the mundane thoughts of many.

What makes the character of journalists is their ability to amplify the voices of those who cannot be heard, the one that unveils the fabric of a facet that’s often overlooked. Indeed, they write articles—but the content each article contains are mantled with faith and determination—especially if that particular topic is almost vanished from the surface of this world, almost engulfed in the void.

Other than being amplifiers of unheard voices, they’re also the trailblazers of truth. In this era, truth can often provoke others and can bring upon fury to society, thus, fear rampantly permeates life. Now, people fear to wield righteousness against others. They fear what others might respond to them. However, journalists—they defy that fear—instead, they are the epitome of courage in the light of truth. They step into the shadows, equipped with just a pen, a sheet of paper, a heart, and a mind. They combat the stifling made by those in power and sometimes, even risk their lives just to shed light upon the hidden cracks that everyone deserves to know.

However, their duties are nothing without values. Like all aspects in life, journalists always encounter challenges: bias, fake news, suppression. In order to conquer those challenges, a journalist must embody dedication, impartiality, open-mindedness, accuracy, and adamancy. Also, the pursuit of sensationalism should never cross the mind as it can overthrow the commitment to truth.

Nonetheless, journalist are not just deliverers of news—they are the pillars and beacons of truth that stand tall amidst the nefarious shadows that lingers around them. The aforementioned story is just a glimpse of what it is to be a journalist because honestly, being a journalist is a labyrinthine journey that not only lasts for a lifetime, but also takes infinite words to describe it. In a nutshell, they are more than what you think—but one thing is certain: they are journalists with a purpose.

The 4th State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos was held this Monday afternoon, July 28, 2025, at the Batasang Pambansa in Quezon City which was attended by high-ranking government officials and esteemed guests.

President Marcos stated the infrastructure, digital connectivity, peace and order, disaster response, and government accountability and emphasized building safe and quality infrastructure and criticized the poorly constructed projects, such as the ₱1-billion Cabagan–Sta. Maria Bridge, and ordered the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to audit all flood control projects.

The President praised the progress in education-related digital access wherein free Wi-Fi sites increased to nearly 19,000 nationwide, compared to only 4,000 in 2022, in which over one million SIM cards with free data were distributed to remote schools.

Regarding peace and order, Marcos stated that the government is seeing the end of active guerrilla groups in the country, and reported that over ₱83 billion worth of illegal drugs had been seized, with more than 150,000 arrests, including public officials.

He also highlighted the construction of modern evacuation centers to avoid using schools as temporary shelters, and urged preparedness for potential disasters, especially as climate threats continue to rise.

President Marcos concluded the 2025 State of the Nation Address by pledging that no budget misaligned with national plans would be approved, it was noted, that the speech failed to mention the concerns of Indigenous Peoples, which drew criticism from several NGOs.

Happy birthday, Ma’am Cherry Ann Esparas! 🍒

To the lady who’s always clad in purple, you have been our amethyst beacon, illuminating our path with the brilliance of your erudition and the compassion of your lavender psyche. You taught us that words are not merely written but lived, breathed, and felt. On this day of your birth, we offer our gratitude and love, encapsulated in periwinkle reverence, for the innumerable times you painted pulchritude on our dull drafts and stitched courage into our fledgling voices. May the lilac dawns ahead be as resplendent as the legacy you continue to engrave in the hearts of every dear learner that you encounter and nurture, including us.

Once again, happy birthday, Ma’am Cherry Ann Esparas, the supreme editor of both our pages and our dreams!

Sincerely, TCL Editorial Board! 💜
