Table Throwback Episode 16 | We Rolled Dice With Jamey Stegmaier and Kaye Still Won

One photo, one memory, one story worth retelling.

Four years ago today, 26 August 2022, Kaye, and I played Rolling Realms alongside a recorded live playthrough by the game’s designer, Jamey Stegmaier himself. We followed his session in real time, rolling through nine realms across three rounds featuring Between Two Castles, The Society, Wingspan, Charterstone, Euphoria, Scythe, My Little Scythe, Pendulum, and Tapestry. After all that, Kaye edged out the win with 47.5 points against Jamey’s 46.3 and my 43.1. Playing alongside the designer and still losing to your wife is a very specific kind of experience.

Behind the Card Episode 2 | Shinji Kanda

This episode’s artist has become one of the most talked about names in the modern Pokemon TCG: Shinji Kanda.

Kanda’s style is instantly recognizable once you have seen it. His art is primarily digital, but he leans into unconventional physical techniques to get there, like coloring with pencils on heat shrink plastic and letting heat concentrate the color, or scanning crumpled aluminum foil and using its texture as a base. The result is a look that feels dense and layered, like each card is a full scene rather than just a portrait.

From our own collection, this batch features Sandshrew, Talonflame, Slither Wing, Aerodactyl, and Duraludon. Notice the background detail, the dramatic lighting, and the sense of movement in every piece.

Kanda has become known among collectors for turning even lower tier Pokemon into chase cards purely because of his art style. Fitting, since a couple of relatively overlooked Pokemon are getting the spotlight treatment here.

Score or Snore Episode 213: A Father’s Pack Under Mjolnir

This Phantasmal Flames pack came from Kaye’s dad, who picked it up from a 7-Eleven branch in Alfonso, Cavite. Before opening it, we placed it under Mjolnir to see if a little thunderous luck could help.

Our first five games of The Crew were played on Board Game Arena, so they don’t qualify for First Play Magic. Following our physical-only rule, this is where The Crew officially enters the series, with Games 6 to 8 marking our first physical sessions.

The two-player variant also gives the game a very different dynamic. With the additional controlled hand on the table, we had to account for information that wasn’t truly in either player’s hands, making communication, deduction, and card management feel different from a larger group.

Our physical campaign started particularly well. Missions 1 to 3 of Campaign 2 were each completed on the first attempt, giving us a perfect 3-for-3 run. The photo was taken after Game 8, marking the end of this first physical session.

Every single Pokemon TCG pack we have ripped since we started collecting is sitting right here in these tins. Every one, except for one casualty that got torn apart a little too excitedly by Kyu.

It is wild seeing the pile grow pack by pack. Every wrapper here has a memory attached, a pull, a laugh, or a heartbreak.
