Nutrition Action Officer, Kareen Ugay attended the Forum on Strengthening the Bantay Asin Task Force in Caraga Region and Retooling of WYD Salt Iodine Checker last May 15-17, in General Luna, Siargao Islands, Surigao Del Norte.

The forum was successfully conducted by the National Nutrition Council Caraga Region facilitated by RNPC Dr. Niño Archie S. Labordo and staff, in coordination with the UNICEF Philippines through Ms. Maria Evelyn Carpio, UNICEF Nutrition Specialist and Dr. Alexander Michael G. Palma. UNICEF Program Consultant.

Participants on the said forum were coming from different local and national agencies, LGUs, DILG, PNP, BFP, TESDA, DOLE, DTI, DEPED and YOUTH Representative

Ms. Ugay acquired the knowledge and skills during the retooling workshop which will enable to effectively implement salt iodization programs and contribute to the overall improvement of nutritional status in the Municipality of Bacuag.

TUTOK KAINAN DIETARY SUPPLEMENTATION PROGRAM

The Local Government Unit of Bacuag, under the leadership of Municipal Mayor Hon. Felicisimo C. Cebedo, received commodities for the Tutuk Kainan Supplementation Program from the National Nutrition Council Caraga Region, bringing joy and hope to the community. The program aims to prevent stunting among children aged 0-23 months by enhancing the quality and quantity of food and nutrient intake for at-risk pregnant women. The goods were inspected upon receipt by MNAO Kareen Ugay, MHO Ma. Carmen Tantoy, and MPDC Margie Liguido, marking a significant milestone in promoting the health and well-being of pregnant mothers in the municipality.

On February 2, parents with children aged between 0 and 59 months gathered at the municipal ground of LGU Bacuag to conduct the Operation Timbang Plus of Barangay Poblacion. This venue was convenient for mothers from both district 1 and district 2. The event received full support from the Punong Barangay, Hon. Marc Arthur O. Caberte, along with the barangay officials, SK Chairman Hon. Marc Chito Orquina, purok chairman, BHWS daycare workers, Barangay Nutrtion Scholars, FHSIS focal Mrs. Rowena Galanida and the assigned Nurse Mrs. Cecile Tadlas, The Operation Timbang Plus was conducted successfully.

Punong Barangay the Hon. Marc Athur O. Caberte highlighted that this nutritional assessment/OPT PLUS is crucial in identifying different forms of malnutrition. Sadly, it is concerning to note that Barangay Poblacion has one of the highest prevalences of malnutrition. However, the Punong Barangay expressed his determination to collaborate with nutrition programs in order to improve the well-being of this children.

Our dedicated nutrition officer, Kareen Ugay, and the BNS are unwavering in providing Operation Timbang Plus services and other related nutrition services in Barangay Sto. Rosario, despite the challenging road, just to reach the community and extend their services.

We are grateful to the barangay officials, SK Chairman, who have supported the OPT plus program under the leadership of Honorable Geronimo Galindo. This exemplifies the commitment of a true leader and a nutrition champion, especially in their barangay.

We would like also to express our gratitude to the Barangay Health Workers (BHW), daycare worker, tanods, purok chairman, and the midwife assigned, Mrs. Jenny Rose Sabal, for their assistance in easing our workload and gathering the people. We also sincerely thank the parents for bringing their children for the nutritional assessment.

Each household member consumes an average of 4 cups of well-milled or polished cooked rice daily.

This is according to the 2018-2019 Expanded National Nutrition Survey (ENNS) on Food Consumption of the Department of Science and Technology – Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI).

The DOST-FNRI suggested various healthy, nutritious, and filling ROOT CROPS that every household can try.

Barangay Pungtod supports the Operation Timbang Plus 2024 (OPT), which is an annual weighing and height measurement for preschoolers aged 0-59 months.

The OPT Plus teams, led by the active Nutrition Action Officer Mrs. Kareen Ugay, include Barangay Nutrition Scholars, Nutrition Program Coordinator Mrs Arlen M***a, FHSIS Focal Mrs. Rowena Galanida, Barangay Health Workers (BHW), Barangay Population Officer (BPO), the assigned midwife Mrs. Johniet Recimo, and other community members.

To launch the OPT Plus program, a short program was given, which provided an overview of why and how it will be conducted. A mothers' class was also given to the audience, and activities such as zumba dancing and distribution of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials took place.

We are thankful for the support given by the active Punong Barangay Hon. Teodoro Ibarra, Kagawad on Health Hon. Jacqueline Lozano, council members, SK Chairman, Purok Chairman and their constituents who were present.

Nutrition Officer Kareen Ugay emphasized the importance of OPT Plus, stating that the data gathered and generated will be used for barangay nutrition planning. This initiative will determine the nutritional status of their children and provide interventions to families that need immediate attention. #
