Later today, September 11, the Philippines will once again conduct a 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗲𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹 (𝗡𝗦𝗘𝗗), which aims to prepare citizens for possible strong earthquakes in the future. This isn’t just about the ‘Big One’ in Metro Manila; strong tremors strike different regions across the country from time to time as well.

Crisscrossed by active faults and surrounded by tectonic trenches, the Philippine archipelago is one of the most earthquake-prone regions in the world. According to PHIVOLCS, the country records an average of 20 earthquakes daily, though most are too weak to be felt. Still, history has shown that the Philippines is no stranger to powerful and destructive quakes.

An earthquake map based on data from the U.S. Geological Survey (1975–2024), while not capturing every minor tremor, reveals that nearly every region, from Extreme Northern Luzon to BARMM, has experienced seismic activity. The notable exception is Palawan, which has remained relatively quiet in terms of recorded earthquakes.

It’s important to remember that earthquakes themselves rarely kill; it’s the secondary effects, such as collapsing structures, landslides, tsunamis, fires, and flooding, that pose the gravest risks. Strengthening awareness, preparedness, and infrastructure is essential to saving lives.

What Is An Oceanic Trench?
An oceanic trench is a narrow and elongated depression on the ocean floor. These formations mark the deepest areas of the seafloor and are typically found at the boundaries of converging tectonic plates. The plates slowly move toward each other, at rates ranging from just a few millimeters to over 10 centimeters per year. A trench forms when one plate is forced beneath another in a process called subduction. On average, oceanic trenches extend 1.9 to 2.5 miles deeper than the surrounding seafloor. This discussion highlights some of the deepest oceanic trenches in the world.

How do we know the Sun's age?
How do we know how old it is? We look at the age of the whole solar system, because it all came together around the same time.
To get this number, we look for the oldest things we can find. Moon rocks work well for this. When astronauts brought them back for scientists to study them, they were able to find out how old they are.

Heavenly Father,
We lift up to You the young learners of our country Philippines. Grant them wisdom as they pursue knowledge, courage as they face challenges, and perseverance in the midst of difficulties.

Bless them with good health, a clear mind, and a compassionate heart. Protect them from harm and guide them away from distractions that keep them from their true purpose.

May they honor their parents, teachers, and community by using their talents for good. Inspire them to dream big and work hard, not only for their own future but also for the progress and peace of our nation.

Lord, we pray that You surround them with hope when they feel discouraged, strength when they are weak, and faith when they doubt themselves. May they always remember that with You, nothing is impossible.

This we ask in Jesus’ Name,
Amen.
