As the 9th Abaca Festival unfolds in full celebration of heritage and craftsmanship, the Province of Catanduanes brings to the fore the time-honored skills and traditions of the abacaleros through the 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗮 𝗣𝗮𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 – a tribute to the artistry, resilience, and ingenuity of Catandunganon abacaleros.

Happening on May 27, 2025 at the Provincial Capitol Grounds, this all-day competition series gather abacalero communities from across the province, as they engage in a friendly yet meaningful contests that highlight traditional abaca stripping and creative expressions.

Here are the competitions you don’t want to miss:

• 𝐀𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐚 𝐇𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐠 – A test of skill and patience, this contest pays homage to the painstaking method of extracting abaca fibers by hand.
• 𝐓𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 – Precision meets technique in this contest where raw abaca is twisted into durable cords to be shaped for both practical and artistic uses.
• 𝐒𝐮𝐠-𝐨𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 – Weaving abaca fibers into the sug-ot, keeping indigenous weaving styles alive in the modern age.
• 𝐀𝐛𝐚𝐊𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐡𝐚𝐧– A musical showdown where original songs about abaca take center stage.

More than just contests, the Abaca Paaralistuhan Contests is a learning arena, cultural exhibit, and platform of pride – amplifying the deep ties between the people of Catanduanes and the abaca that has shaped their way of life.
