ALAM NIYO BA?
The MIRADOR JESUIT VILLA RETREAT HOUSE AND ECO PARK is a historic and spiritual landmark in Baguio City, perched atop Mirador Hill. Its history is a blend of scientific pursuit, religious devotion, and wartime resilience.
1. The Naming and Early Origins (1876โ1900)
The Name: In 1876, Manuel Scheidnagel, the Spanish Governor Politico-Militar of Benguet, named the hill "El Mirador" (meaning "the lookout" or "vantage point") because of its sweeping views of the Lingayen Gulf, La Union, and the South China Sea.
The Vision: In 1890, Fr. Miguel Roces, SJ, suggested acquiring a site in the cool mountains of Benguet to serve as a sanatorium for Jesuits exhausted by the heat of Manila.
2. Scientific Foundations (1900โ1908)
Manila Observatory: In 1900, the Jesuits established a meteorological and seismic station on the hill. It became a renowned center for studying Philippine weather and earthquakes.
Acquisition: The Jesuits officially purchased the 32-hectare property at a public auction in 1906 for 1,092.94 pesos.
First Residences: The first "villa" was a modest three-bedroom pine-board house built in 1907. By 1908, a more permanent stone building was completed at the summit to serve as a summer retreat.
3. The Lourdes Grotto (1913โ1918)
The Shrine: In 1913, Fr. Josรฉ Alguรฉ, SJ, initiated the construction of the Lourdes Grotto. The image of Our Lady of Lourdes was carved from molave wood by the famous Filipino sculptor Isabelo Tampinco.
The Stairs: The iconic stairway of 252 steps (originally 212) leading up to the grotto was completed in 1918, making it one of Baguio's most famous pilgrimage sites.
4. War and Reconstruction (1941โ1952)
Destruction: During World War II, Japanese forces occupied the villa. In 1945, the stone house was completely destroyed during the carpet-bombing of Baguio by Allied Forces.
Rebirth: Between 1951 and 1952, the retreat house was rebuilt. It was designed by Gines Rivera (who also designed the Ateneo de Manila campus). The architecture was inspired by "Old Baguio" colonial styles, featuring structures raised on stilts to avoid the damp earth.
5. Modern Era and the Eco Park (1967โPresent)
Center for Study: From 1952 to 1967, it served as a house of studies for Jesuits expelled from Communist China.
Formal Retreat House: In 1967, it officially opened its doors as a retreat house for the clergy and the laity.
Heritage and Eco-Spirituality Park: In December 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the property was expanded into the Mirador Heritage and Eco-Spirituality Park.
It now features the Bamboo Grove (inspired by Arashiyama in Japan), the Blue Moon Gate, and various prayer gardens that integrate Ignatian spirituality with the natural environment.
