Top of the middle distance in Antwerp:

The late Emiel Daems and his son Louis claimed 1st place in the national Bourges with ‘den Bange’. A year later, ‘den Bange’ triumphed again, winning 1st provincial Orléans against over 3,000 pigeons. From then on, first prizes became more the rule than the exception. That same year, another pigeon, ‘de As’, represented Belgium at the Olympiad in Verona. Olympiade 003 made a big impact through its offspring and descendants. One notable example is “Son Olympiade” BE08-6050184, a direct offspring, who achieved several top prizes, including 1st Quiévrain against 810 and 285 pigeons. This bloodline became common in many internationally traded Heremans-Ceusters pedigrees, which is why the name Olympiade 003 / Gust Janssen still shows up in modern breeding records.

The Pitbull family is closely linked to Karel Laenen, with later breeding bringing in other top Belgian speed lines. He specialized in extreme-distance racing, with notable events including Marseille, Perpignan, Barcelona, and Pau. Biss gained influence by assembling exceptional long-distance pigeons from both Britain and continental Europe. Among his most significant acquisitions was Black Velvet, who had won 1st Open BICC Perpignan for John Woodsford and was purchased by Biss in 1979. The standout in the loft is the c**k ‘Provo’, bred from the legendary ‘811’ of Krouwel-Pollmann, one of the finest sons of ‘De 46’. His mother was a direct Janssen hen, bred from ‘Blauwe van 69’ x ‘Duifke van de Schonen onder de Tafel’. A whole regiment of ‘Provo’ descendants went on to dominate the pigeon sport, joining the ranks of legendary pigeons from the past.

Georges Coutteau was a renowned Belgian long-distance and marathon pigeon fancier from Ramskapelle near Nieuwpoort, West Flanders. His small loft became famous for producing exceptional pigeons—earning the nickname “mini-loft with maxi results” from Belgian pigeon writers. Influenced early on by Hector Desmet, Coutteau acquired birds from the Desmet/“Thompson” line, forming a key part of his long-distance family. He later introduced pigeons from André Dereere, whose stock carried the bloodlines of Maurice Vandevelde, Julien Ryheul, Albert Gorin, and Martin Vanthuyn, creating some of Coutteau’s finest racers and breeders.

Georges Coutteau’s most famous pigeon, originally called “50” and later nicknamed the “Joker,” built an impressive career over several years. His achievements included 4th National Perpignan 1981, 6th International Perpignan 1981, 40th National Perpignan 1982, 9th National Barcelona 1983, 36th National Barcelona 1984, 2nd National Barcelona 1985, and winning the Golden Wing in 1985. What made the Joker truly remarkable was not just a single standout performance, but his consistent competitiveness in grueling long-distance races year after year.
